When Anna Dopico reflects on her fondest memories at the University of Ottawa, convocation immediately comes to her mind. Although she enjoyed her student experience, the conclusion of her University career, meant the beginning of a new one. "For me, this was the starting point of my journey to a career in the business world.” Anna explains
As a result, Anna has had many career successes, including her position as Director of Corporate Transformation and Control for CIBC and now President of Endeavor Volunteer Consulting for Non- profits. Anna is also the author of ‘To Make Riders Faster’, a self-published book that tells the inside story of Cervélo Cycles, a company co-founded by Gerard Vroomen and Phil White an alumnus of the University.
To Make Riders Faster is an inspirational and cautionary tale of two entrepreneurs who took their company, Cervélo Cycles, from a school basement project in Montreal, Canada, to their bikes winning in the Tour de France, the Olympics and Ironman. Vroomen and White built the most sought-after brand in the cycling world in less than a decade and faced the fight of their lives to keep their company alive.
“The book begins with Vroomen and White meeting at McGill University in 1995 and takes you on a wild ride of success and setback with laughter and tears all the while sharing cycling stories and engineering insights. The story is woven with words, images and quotes. It is a unique combination of a beautiful book and a biography of the company that reflects the aesthetic values of the Cervélo brand."
This 256-page hardcover book is available for purchase at www.ToMakeRidersFaster.com. A percentage of the net proceeds goes to CAN Fund, a Canadian non-profit athlete club.

David Bishop — Loyal Donor of the Year
The years I spent as a Telfer BCom student were among the best of my life. Not only did I get a thorough grounding in business theory, but I also took non-business courses that both broadened my intellectual horizon and enabled me to view business from varying perspectives. For example, I recall English professor Paul Marcotte fondly. I’m still inspired by his enthusiasm and use his Essays in Speculative Literary Criticism to spur discussions with friends. Speaking of friends, I made many at the Telfer School: it took us 565 steps to walk from the doors of the former Arts Building, now Simard Hall, to the Albion Hotel. I also was active in student affairs, serving as the managing editor of The Fulcrum and director of the central advertising committee. Scholarship, friendship, leadership—mine was a true university education.
I left with a degree and a keen sense of possibility, and used both as a springboard to my future. Ultimately, as a Deloitte partner, I enjoyed working with some of the brightest and most helpful people one could hope for. Looking back, the rewarding experience I enjoyed at the Telfer School was an essential part of my foundation for a wonderful personal and professional life.
I’m also aware that my Telfer School experience was made possible, in part, by the financial support provided by countless donors. My decision to be a steadfast donor stems from my ongoing gratitude for the foundation the school and its backers gave me. My message to Telfer School graduates: as you experience success in your lives, take your turn in contributing to champion those who follow you. Be thankful and show it; contribute so others can enjoy enriching experiences; never take a good thing for granted; and never take this good thing for granted.

Rob Ashe and Sandra Herrick — Donors of the Year
We’re Ottawa people. We grew up here, went to the University of Ottawa, built careers in our hometown after graduating and raised a family together. We owe much of our subsequent success and happiness to the rich learning experiences we enjoyed at uOttawa. We’re by no means alone. The university means a great deal to our hometown, especially its core. uOttawa is the academic, cultural and athletic heartbeat of downtown. It’s only natural to give back to an institution that has been vital to our lives and to the city we call home.
We’re also entrepreneurial people—Rob especially. He has spent some 30 years in lead roles in the local high-tech industry. While we’ve seen this sector grow steadily, we’ve also seen it falter at times. Its missing link has been a lack of management expertise for companies founded by entrepreneurs and fuelled by disruptive technologies. It’s tough enough to bring an idea to market successfully; it’s even harder to make an innovative company sustainable. The donation we made to the Telfer School is our way of forging that crucial link.
The Dom Herrick Entrepreneur in Residence at the Telfer School is designed to propel young entrepreneurs to create and lead groundbreaking businesses. The residency also spurs people from traditional business environments to infuse these settings with the entrepreneurial qualities of ambition, experimentation and resilience. The fact that the Telfer School has made entrepreneurship a strategic area of expertise only adds to the wisdom of our financial donation. To make our contribution complete, we dedicated the residency to Sandra’s late father. Dom Herrick had those key qualities of an entrepreneur. He was also keen to learn what new companies were emerging in his hometown, why some of these enterprises prospered and what aspects of their success he could apply in his job in the service industry. We’re thrilled that a residency in his name is a force for entrepreneurship in Ottawa. We think he would be too.

That’s not a typo. As an experienced healthcare executive, I’ve always had a strong commitment to improve healthcare delivery at organizational and system levels—to lead a legacy today rather than leave one tomorrow. My career has been a continuing effort to live up to this commitment. I’ve engaged not only in healthcare transformation, but also in human resources planning, organizational culture, system partnerships and other matters that underpin the business of healthcare delivery. On top of that, I teach leadership development programs, mentor current and budding healthcare professionals, and work with healthcare professionals to make their organizations increasingly efficient, resilient and successful in delivering better outcomes for patients.
Leading a legacy is vitally needed in the healthcare sector. After all, ours is no ordinary business. At its heart is the wellbeing of our fellow citizens and society as a whole. That’s the reason I’ve always wanted to devote my career to healthcare from my early days. I worked at hospitals as a teenager and earned an undergraduate degree in biology and life sciences. Yet it wasn’t until I joined the Telfer Master of Health Administration program back in the late 1970s that I received instruction in business management and healthcare policy and economics. This training enabled me to connect with what matters to me—becoming a leader and mentor in a sector I’m passionate about.
The Telfer School prepared me to serve as an executive at an academic research hospital, an assistant deputy minister in our province’s Ministry Health and Long-term Care, an executive-in-residence at a business school, and a leader at global consulting firms. Forty years into my career, I’m still learning. There’s a continuous newness to the healthcare sector because it’s changing all the time. Especially now. The transformation underway inspires me to redouble my efforts to maximize the leadership potential of healthcare professionals and make our sector’s organizations and overall system better than ever—to lead a legacy and not merely leave one.

I liken success to an ever-widening circle. Opening yourself to a range of experiences expands your knowledge and empathy. When these qualities grow, you not only advance personally and professionally, but also help others flourish. I first realized this truth while a student at the Telfer School. The school was a stimulating academic environment that I made even richer by taking advantage of learning opportunities outside my classrooms and lecture halls. I played basketball for uOttawa, joined the business consultancy group on campus, and continued to look for other ways to widen my circle of experience.
I’ve followed this same approach since I graduated in 1983. An accountant by training, I was instrumental in making my firm more inclusive, its employees more skilled and its brand more powerful. So much so that I became managing partner of Ernst & Young in Ottawa. I also sought out ways to contribute to my community. I have served for several years on the boards of the local United Way campaign, the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation, the Royal Ottawa Foundation for Mental Health and the uOttawa board of governors, as well as chairing its audit committee.
Broadening my experiences in all these ways has made me a stronger leader, made my firm and its people more successful, and made my community an even better place to live. Seeing my firm and community grow is very important to me. I encourage current and prospective Telfer School students to follow my lead. Our school holds open plenty of opportunities to learn and give. Seize them. Widen your circle of experience and then reap and share the rewards.

Philanthropy matters most to me. The importance of giving time, money and knowledge to others is one of the most valuable lessons I learned as a student of the Telfer School. My experiences as a member of our School’s Jeux du Commerce team, the Finance Society and the Entrepreneurs’ Club supplied and reinforced this truth.
My involvement in the Entrepreneurs’ Club was especially instructive. Not only did I come to understand the role philanthropy plays in a rewarding career, but I also discovered the value of a mentor to help steer my career in the right direction. Luckily for me, I’ve since found two advisors who, among other things, have stressed just how essential reconnecting with my alma mater is to being a professional. Simply put, everyone who thrives in business has a duty to share his or her success in meaningful ways.
As someone who has succeeded as a partner and portfolio manager in an investment firm, I give to the Telfer School in several ways—speaking at events, acting as a mentor and funding scholarships that stress academic achievement and community involvement. A few years back, I based my philanthropy on a simple principle: support two students per year and then build from there. I urge young Telfer School alumni and soon-to-be graduates to profit from my example. Find a mentor who is passionate about his or her business. Adopt a giving principle that works best for you. Start sharing your success.

Marvin Hough, Executive in Residence at Telfer and University of Alberta (BCom and MBA) graduate has spent a significant part of his career promoting Canada-India trade relations. He is also President of MIRA, an international consulting firm.
Marvin served 30 years at Export Development Canada (EDC) where he supported many Canadian firms selling to or investing in India through the provision of financing and insurance services. During his EDC career, he also undertook a four year assignment in India with the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development as a Trade Commissioner in India to gain on the ground experience.
Since retiring from EDC, Marvin has continued to support the effort by teaching in the EMBA and undergraduate programs at Telfer (where he has developed courses on doing business in India and organizing the annual India Forum). He has also been active in supporting Indo-Canadian trade, through his work as a Director of the Canada–India Business Council (C-IBC) and member of the Indo-Canadian Ottawa Business Chamber (ICOBC). Marvin's long term efforts in supporting Indo-Canadian trade have recently earned him an Award of Excellence from the ICOBC.
According to Marvin, since his assignment in India 25 years ago, there have been some very positive developments in both the Indian business environment and the relations between Canada and India. He believes that, in many ways, the timing for Indo-Canadian commercial collaboration has never been better and the Indian market never more exciting.
The recent election in India offers great promise that economic reform will ramp up and that some of the red tape will be removed. Further, according to Marvin, government to government relations are also poised to bring us a free trade agreement as we move forward.
From Marvin's perspective, the big question is whether Canadian firms will get serious about India and make a commitment to the market. The modest level of two way trade between Canada and India ($6 billion) can be attributed to a considerable degree to the lack of commitment by Canadian firms. Canadian executives must understand that they not only need to commit time and money to penetrate the market, they need to adapt their approach from that used in the US and other developed markets.
In India, Canadian firms need a more flexible agenda, they need to connect and build trust and really focus on relationships. They need to understand that an effective presence in the market is crucial and adapt to the local business culture. They also need to be well prepared for tough negotiation and very price conscious buyers.
Marvin intends to continue his efforts to support the cause through his teaching at Telfer, his work at the C-IBC and his consulting advice to Canadian firms looking to penetrate the Indian market. "Above all, to realize the potential, we need to demonstrate that Canadians are committed to long term relationships with India and that we are willing and able to adapt to the market".

Gurprit Kindra, professor of marketing at the Telfer School, served as an expert witness in a recent case decided by the Federal Court of Canada. The dispute involved Corporation Habanos, the makers of Cohiba cigars, and Tequila Cuervo of Mexico. Corporation Habanos sought protection under Canada’s Trade-marks Act when Tequila Cuervo sought to market a rum in Canada called “Lazaro Cohiba” rum.
Normally, under such circumstances, the applicant has to prove in Court the fame of the brand in question in the marketplace, an expensive and time consuming process. As expert witness, Professor Kindra used the novel idea of using pop culture as a proxy for establishing a brand’s reputation. The Cohiba brand had been widely referenced in film, television, music and other media and Corporation Habanos, on the strength of that evidence, was able to demonstrate that Cohiba trademarks are widely known across Canada. In its decision, the Court prohibited Tequila Cuervo from using the Lazaro Cohiba name in Canada.
The decision (2013 FC 1010) is being appealed by Tequila Cuervo.

Professor Walid Ben Amar received an Emerald Literati award for research published in the International Journal of Managerial Finance. The paper investigated the link between ownership structure, earnings management preceding a merger and acquisition and the acquiring firm’s subsequent long-term market performance. It was named as one of three “highly commended” papers published in 2012. The study was co-authored with Claude Francoeur and Philémon Rakoto, Department of Accounting Studies, HEC Montréal.
The team took a closer look at dominant shareholders’ motivations to manage earnings in stock-financed M&A. From the abstract: “Large shareholders have strong incentives to manage earnings upward prior to stock-financed transactions to limit the dilution of their controlling position. Regulators can play an important role in preventing dominant shareholders from engaging in opportunistic earnings management in stock-financed M&A.”

Professor Umar Ruhi of the Telfer School and Sabbir Ahmed, a graduate student in the M.Sc. E-Business Technologies Program have been awarded Mitacs Accelerate funding which they will use to study BI (business intelligence) mashups.
BI mashups help knowledge workers – i.e., analysts, developers, and project managers – respond better to unpredictable events which create a need for just-in-time data management. These tools are a new kind of web based applications providing self-service and real-time BI. They unify disparate data and services to respond more effectively to analytical needs at the level of the individual and the business. In addition, they complement traditional BI tools, which often have a poor utilisation rate. Many industry experts believe that BI mashups can help reverse that trend in part because they encourage the engagement of end-users.
The researchers will review the current landscape of BI and market-vendor interactions. They will also formulate a utility framework that can help organizations understand the business process requirements that can be satisfied through the use of BI mashups.
Professor Ruhi and Mr. Ahmed have been awarded $15,000 for their research investigation from the Mitacs Accelerate Program. The program provides applied research internship opportunities to graduate student researchers. Mitacs is providing one-half of the funding towards Mr. Ahmed’s internship, with the balance being contributed from the project’s industry partner IBM Canada Ltd.

Lavagnon Ika of the Telfer School has received a prestigious prize from the International Project Management Association (IPMA) recognizing his research program on the supervision, management and critical success factors of international development projects funded by the World Bank. Professor Ika’s work opens up promising opportunities for reciprocal contributions between the fields of project management and international development while laying the ground for new insights on best practices.
“Project practitioners in any industry can draw valuable lessons from other sectors and also learn a great deal from failure. All too frequently, projects fail because of mismanagement,” says Professor Ika, who taught project management for twelve years at the Université du Québec en Outaouais in Gatineau before joining the faculty at Telfer last August. “International development projects in particular can be instructive, given their complexity as multisectorial, social, technical, and political undertakings.”
IPMA presented Dr. Ika with a 2012 Young Researcher Award for his outstanding doctoral work and related scholarly output. Among his research contributions, Ika recently published “Critical success factors for World Bank projects: An empirical investigation,” in the International Journal of Project Management, and he is the guest editor of a special issue at the Journal of African Business entitled: “Why do projects fail in Africa?”
Professor Ika received his award, presented his findings, and contributed to a panel of award winners on the practice insights emerging from the research at the 26th IPMA World Congress, October 29-31 on the Greek island of Crete.

Professor Magda Donia and lead researcher Alexandra-Joëlle Panaccio of Concordia University’s John Molson School of Business will study servant leadership in diverse cultural contexts through a grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Council of Canada (SSHRC).
Servant leadership theory proposes that leaders who engage in altruistic or selfless behaviours help nurture positive employee behaviours, but little is known about the mechanisms that underlie that relationship. The researchers will therefore examine the mediating role of employee attitudes, and the moderating role of cultural context in the manifestations and impact of servant leadership behaviours. They will also look into how servant leadership may, over time, influence followers to themselves engage in organizational citizenship behaviours for altruistic motives.

Sylvain Durocher has been awarded a $10,000 grant from CGA-Canada and the Canadian Academic Accounting Association (CAAA) to research “Comprehensive Income Information: A User’s Perspective.” Dr. Durocher, Logan Katz Fellow and Associate Professor at the Telfer School, focuses his research on accounting standard-setting, studying it from different theoretical perspectives.
His new project, with Anne Fortin of the Department of Accounting at Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), will examine the use of comprehensive income information by financial statement users. It will also assess whether the reporting format can have an impact on their judgments and decisions. To date there is limited empirical evidence about the actual use of OCI by financial statement users in their financial analyses.
The researchers will add to the debate on comprehensive income, enrich the literature comparing professional and nonprofessional investors, provide valuable data on the impact of the two current reporting formats on users’ judgments and decisions, and contribute new insights on the impact of actuarial gains and losses – an important OCI item – on users’ judgments and decisions.

Micheál Kelly, former Dean of the Telfer School of Management (2000-2010), has been named as Dean at Wilfrid Laurier University’s School of Business & Economics. His mandate will start in July. We wish him the best of luck in his new endeavour.
The Wilfrid Laurier University News Release follows below.
April 30, 2012 - WATERLOO – Micheál Kelly, a professor of Strategic and International Management and former dean at the Telfer School of Management at the University of Ottawa, has been named the dean of the Laurier School of Business & Economics (SBE).
Kelly, who will join Laurier in July, is a respected academic who helped transform the Telfer School into a leading centre for management education and research. He is also a highly sought-after consultant in the technology sector, and has extensive experience in government.
"Attracting a dean of the calibre befitting Laurier's excellent School of Business & Economics was no mean feat,” said Deborah MacLatchy, vice-president: academic and provost. “Micheál Kelly’s broad experience – in government, as an advisor to businesses, and as an academic leader – makes him an ideal fit for Laurier."
Kelly will be taking over from Professor William Banks, who has served as acting dean since Feb. 1, 2011.
“We are very grateful to Bill for stepping up when needed and serving as dean on an interim basis while the search for a full-time candidate was conducted,” said MacLatchy.
Laurier’s commitment to providing an outstanding educational experience for its students is just one of the many reasons that attracted Kelly to SBE, he said. In addition, he is impressed by Laurier’s efforts to become a leader in education and research.
“Laurier’s SBE has a great reputation among Canadian business schools for the quality of its students, faculty, programs, research and alumni,” said Kelly. “All of the ingredients are there to build an institution of global significance and prominence.”
Kelly served as dean at Telfer from 2000 to 2010. Under his leadership the school earned three major international accreditations, known as the “Triple Crown”. The accreditations indicate that every aspect of a business school – from its activities and programs to its mission and corporate governance – has been thoroughly evaluated and meets the highest standards of excellence. It was also during this time that Telfer received the largest naming endowment ever for a Canadian business school.
Currently, Kelly is professor of Strategic and International Management at the Telfer School. His recent academic research focuses on the management of global innovation systems, research and development alliances, and the competitive strategies of technology-based firms. He advises technology companies around the world on foreign investment strategies, alliance management and financing international expansions.
Prior to joining the University of Ottawa in 1998, Kelly held senior positions with the Government of Canada in various departments including foreign affairs, international trade, industry, and science and technology.
Kelly has a Bachelor of Arts in Foreign Affairs and Economics from Assumption College in Worcester, Massachusetts; a Master of Science in Political Science-International Relations from the University of Ottawa; and a Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science from Carleton University.
