Our history

  • The Telfer School of Management was founded in 1969 as the "Faculty of Management Science" with Dean Joseph Debanné at the helm. At this time, the Faculty housed 715 students, more than 30 full-time faculty and approximately 20 part-time faculty.
  • The Faculty's graduate programs (MBA and MHA) became recognized by the Government of Ontario.
  • Reynald Maheu succeeded Joseph Debanné as Dean of the Faculty of Management Science.
  • John Carson was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Management Science.
  • The School adopted the name of Faculty of Administration.
  •  The Faculty underwent major structural changes; departments were abolished, programs were created. Two new Associate Deans were named; one for undergraduate program and one for graduate program.
  • The international exchange program was created.
  • Gilles Paquet was appointed Dean of the School. Enrolment grew to more than 3,000 undergraduate and 400 graduate students and employed some sixty full-time professors and approximately fifty part-time teachers. The Faculty counted 24 support staff members.
  • The Faculty moved to Vanier Hall. Many initiatives were launched, including the co-op options and the opening of other graduate programs. With 600 Master's students, the Faculty of Administration had the largest graduate program portfolio throughout the University, at the time.
  • David Zussman was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Administration. During his tenure, Dr. Zussman established an Advisory Board made up of leaders from business and government sectors to provide advice and guidance about the kind of educational initiatives essential for responding to a rapidly changing environment.
  • Jean-Louis Malouin was appointed the position of Dean. The Faculty revamped its undergraduate degrees by abolishing all program Majors and Minors and introduced the Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) programs with or without option.
  • The Executive MBA program was launched. This cutting-edge program allowed student clientele to complete their MBA in two years without interrupting their career.

    The same year, the Faculty Network is connected to Internet.
  • Under the leadership of Dean Jean-Louis Malouin, the School began to concentrate on the development of International Management and Business programs. Several projects were piloted, such as the launch of an Executive MBA in Hong Kong.
  • Following the birth of the first web server in 1994, the School's first website was launched to the public. 1996 was a banner year for our IT department, as networked PCs became available to students as well as laptops, with internet and printer access. Professors could also broadly use Powerpoint and other modern tools from the Web and project them in class. Documents were shared directly electronically to student via Doc-depot.
  • In the year 2000, we welcomed Dean Micheál J. Kelly, to the Faculty of Administration.
  • It is during Dean Kelly’s second year, 2002, that the Faculty of Administration adopted the name “School of Management”.
  • The School of Management's Career Centre was launched under the direction of Professor Peter Koppel.
  • The School of Management received AACSB accreditation, an international accreditation representing the highest standard of achievement for business schools worldwide.
  • School of Management received AMBA accreditation - with a mandate to confirm that a school's MBA and other graduate professional programs are both of the highest quality and relevant to the changing world of business.
  • On May 8, 2007 the School is renamed Telfer School of Management in recognition of alumnus (MBA 1976) and Chairman of Goldcorp Inc., Ian Telfer’s $25 million donation. At the time, this was the most generous gift pledged to a Canadian Business School on record.
  • In September 2007, the Telfer School of Management moved to the new Desmarais Building. The building was named in honour of Paul G. Desmarais (BCom 1950), a University of Ottawa alumnus and one of Canada’s most distinguished corporate leaders.
  • Telfer created and began offering two new graduate programs: MSc MGT - Master of Science in Management & MSc HS - Master of Science in Health Systems.
  • In 2009, the Telfer School of Management received it’s third accreditation, EQUIS, and became one of only 50 business schools in the world to have achieved the triple crown of accreditations.
  • Former student, professor, MBA Director, Associate-Dean Programs, and Vice-Dean, François Julien was appointed Dean of the Telfer School of Management.
  • Financial Research and Learning Lab are launched.
  • The Master of Health Administration (MHA) program celebrated 50 years. The origins of the Master's program in Health Services Management go back to 1964 with the creation of the School of Hospital Administration.
  • Camille Villeneuve (BCom, 1967 and Honorary Doctorate, 1996) pledged $1.5 million to the Telfer School and the room DMS4101 was named Salle Camille-Villeneuve Room.
  • The Telfer School launched a new program: PhD - Doctoral Studies in Management.
  • Launch of the Graduate Diploma in Chartered Professional Accountancy (CPA).
  • After 25 years at the World Exchange Plaza, our Executive Leadership Center was moved to a brand new, world-class educational building located at 99 Bank Street. CEO Magazine (London, UK) released its 2017 ranking of the top Global Executive MBA programs and ranked the Telfer School of Management’s Executive MBA program #1 in the world.
  • The Telfer School of Management celebrates 50 years of impact in the community!
