Letter of Permission (LPR)
A Letter of Permission (LPR) allows you to take one or more courses at another university and have them recognized as part of your BCom program requirements.
What is it exactly?
A LPR allows students to take a course at a university with which the University of Ottawa does not have a formal agreement.
For formal agreements already in place with Carleton University and Saint Paul University, please refer to Academic Regulation A-10 – Transfer of Credits.
Who is eligible?
Students who are:
- Undergraduate or graduate level
- In good academic standing
You are not eligible if you are on probation, have been withdrawn from Telfer, have an outstanding account balance, or have already completed all degree requirements.
Steps to submit a request
- Read all the LPR rules and conditions.
- Identify the course from your program that you wish to take elsewhere.
- Find an equivalent course at the host university and obtain its course description.
- Submit the online application – here.
- Reply to the confirmation email within 48 hours (otherwise, the request will be cancelled).
- Your request will be evaluated approximately one (1) month before the start of the term.
- If the request is approved, you will receive an email at your @uOttawa.ca address with the approved LPR attached.
- Once approved, you can register directly with the host university.
- Take the course within the University of Ottawa’s term dates (e.g., Spring/Summer session – May 1 to August 31).
- The host university must send an official transcript to the University of Ottawa before the specified deadlines (paper version by mail or electronic version accepted).
Important notes
- Only courses required for your program will be approved.
- Minimum grade required to receive credits: 60%.
- Grades from courses taken elsewhere (except for the Carleton Exchange or with Saint Paul) do not count toward your GPA.
