First Year Advising

Use this checklist to be prepared, confident and connected as you begin your BCom studies.

  • Read your @uOttawa.ca email regularly so you don’t miss messages from the University and the Telfer school.
  • Get to know your program structure including your courses, requirements, and degree path.
  • Follow all academic regulations, to meet expectations, and academic standing.
  • Know the important dates and deadlines so you can plan and avoid missing key academic steps.
  • Discover ways to get involved in student life, meet other students, and build your Telfer community.
  • Check out scholarships, financial support, and other funding options available to you.
  • Learn how the Career Centre can help you with career planning, job search preparation and professional development
  • Get to know student health and wellness resources. You don’t have to figure everything out on your own.
  • New to Canada? Take advantage of all our services for new students.
  • Learn about course enrolment to be sure you’re enrolled for fall and winter.

Telfer Peer Mentoring Program

As a first-year student, you’ll be matched with an upper-year Telfer student mentor who can guide you in your transition from high school or CEGEP to university. Our mentors can help you to achieve personal success and make the most of your Telfer Nation experience. Keep an eye on your uOttawa email for information from your peer mentor!

About your Dean

Dean Stéphane Brutus received PhD in industrial-organizational psychology and completed a post-doctoral fellowship. Between 2006 and 2017, he served as interim dean, associate dean of graduate professional programs, chair of the management department and director at the Bell Research Centre for Business Process Innovation of the John Molson School of Business of Concordia University.

As you start this adventure, welcome to the Telfer School of Management! I’m very excited that you’ve chosen to study with us. We’re a school internationally recognized for innovative, academically rigorous and student experience-focused business programs, and I’m sure you’ve made the right choice. 

As vice-dean of undergraduate programs and a BCom alumnus, I’m honoured to work with students, professors and staff to make sure your experience incorporates academic, professional and social opportunities throughout your degree.
