Dr. Jonathan Linton Co-Publishes a Book on the Management of Technological Innovation

Dr. Jonathan Linton, Power Corporation Professor in the Management of Technological Enterprises, recently co-edited the book Principle Concepts of Technology and Innovation Management with Robert S. Friedman (New Jersey Institute of Technology) et Desiree M. Roberts (State University of New York-Empire State College).

This reference source provides a critical analysis of the peer-reviewed articles that have had the greatest impact on technology and innovation management. By capturing the most important findings in the management of technological innovation, this work provides scholars with direct access to knowledge from other areas of this multidisciplinary field. The findings presented can also assist professionals who evaluate and manage advanced technologies to make better decisions.

An important Award for Dr. Jonathan Linton

Dr. Jonathan Linton, Power Corporation Professor in the Management of Technological Enterprises, is the recipient of the Technology Innovation Management Research Award, sponsored by the publishing house Elsevier. This award is based on the number of articles published by an author over the last five years in the top ten academic Technology Innovation Management journals. Dr. Linton has been identified as one of the top fifty ranking researchers in this field. Furthermore, he is one of but seven researchers who have maintained this status for an entire decade.  He will receive his award in April 2009 at the annual International Association for the Management of Technology (IAMOT) Conference, which will be held in Orlando, Florida.

Swee Goh Appointed Interis Fellow

The Telfer School of Management at the University of Ottawa and Interis Consulting announced that the firm is making an initial contribution of $180,000 to the Telfer School to fund three new academic initiatives involving the study of public sector performance management. The funding is for a research fellowship, an Interis scholarship for MSc students and a new public sector performance management research cluster at the Telfer School.

Professor Swee C. Goh, Ph.D., has been selected as the Interis Research Fellow. The purpose of this fellowship is to support research in understanding how to achieve effective performance management in public sector organizations. Commenting on his appointment, Professor Goh said: “In my view, research in this area is very timely and much needed. Senior managers in government are facing important challenges with an increasing accountability focus and close scrutiny from the public on effective service and program delivery.”

Micheál Kelly, Dean of the Telfer School, added: “Professor Swee Goh is an excellent choice for this fellowship. He is a distinguished researcher with a very strong focus on the application of research and an outstanding teacher. I have no doubt that as the Interis Research Fellow he will be able to build a dynamic research program that will make a valuable contribution to the management of Canada’s public sector organizations.”

Research Support Centre's Ceremony to Celebrate Research 2008

Le 13 novembre dernier, lors de la Journée portes ouvertes des programmes d’études supérieures de l’École de gestion Telfer, le doyen Micheál J. Kelly et le Centre de soutien à la recherche ont eu le plaisir de reconnaître les succès les plus récents des professeurs de l’École au cours d’une cérémonie pour souligner la recherche. Chacun a reçu une étoile dorée décorée du logo de Telfer. Voici les professeurs qui ont été reconnus :

Fodil Adjaoud Boursier Logan Katz en raison de son engagement soutenu au programme de comptabilité et de son excellence en enseignement et en recherche. Il est également co-auteur, avec Imed Chkir, Narjess Boubakri (HEC Montréal) et Maher Kooli (Université du Québec à Montréal) du livre Finance d’entreprise : Évaluation et gestion.

Morad Benyoucef a obtenu une subvention de 93 500 $ du CRSNG. Son projet, Negotiation Services for e-Marketplaces, a pour objectif d’étudier les façons de doter les cybermarchés de services qui permettent aux participants de transiger des affaires de manière transparente, efficace, juste, pratique, économique et retraçable.

Richard Bozeca publié une deuxième édition de Consolidation of Financial Statements: A Visual Approach. Il a aussi publié un supplément, Consolidation of Financial Statements : Cases, où il propose 10 cas détaillés de consolidation et leurs solutions complètes.

Tom Brzustowski, RBC Financial Group Professor in the Commercialization of Innovation, published a new book entitled The Way Ahead: Meeting Canada’s Productivity Challenge. Combining the author's knowledge of government, industry, and academia, this book articulates a strategy for moving the Canadian economy towards higher-value products based on research and development.

Merridee Bujaki has been appointed Welch & Company Fellow in Accounting. This fellowship is awarded to support accounting professors at the Telfer School of Management. Dr. Bujaki also received a $27,886 Research Development Initiatives grant from SSHRC for her research program entitled The Rideau Waterway: Management, Accounting, Governance and Accountability.

David Doloreux et son co-chercheur Mark Freel ont reçu une subvention de 65 000 $ du CRSH pour le programme de recherche Innovation et services à forte intensité de connaissance : une perspective internationale, qui vise à mieux comprendre l’organisation économique, le développement et les activités en matière d’innovation des services à forte intensité de connaissances (SFIC) au Canada et en Europe.

Scott Ensign received $72,500 in funding through the Public Outreach Grants of the SSHRC for the research project Developing Cases Studies for Instructional/Learning Purposes. The project seeks to develop case studies related to funded research on entrepreneurial behaviour.

Specialist in the areas of innovation and entrepreneurship, Mark Freel was appointed the Mark R. Bruneau Fellow for Global Business and Entrepreneurship. He also received a $88,919 grant from the SSHRC for his research project entitled Complexity, Novelty and Innovation Networking in Small Firms. Mark is also co-investigator on David Doloreux’s and Allan Riding’s research projects funded by SSHRC.

Yuri Khoroshilov received $59,795 from the SSHRC for his research project entitled An Experimental Study of Jump and Shill Bidding in English Auctions and its Effect on the Takeover Contest which is to construct an improved model of takeover auctions by understanding how the target firm’s ability of renegotiate a final price with the winning bidder affects the behaviour of both the bidder and the firm targeted for takeover.

NSERC granted Dan Lane’s research project Marine Evaluation Systems for Fisheries, Oceans and Aquaculture in the amount of $95,000 through the Discovery Grant program. Dan is also Co-Director (with Dr. Patrick Watson of the University of the West Indies) of a research program on environmental change and its impact on coastal communities in the Caribbean region and regional coastal communities in Atlantic, Pacific and Arctic Canada. This project has received $29,560 in seed funding from the International Community-University Research Alliance (ICURA) Program through the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and SSHRC. It will assist in the development of a research alliance which could receive up to $2M in further funding through the ICURA program.

Laurent Lapierre a été nommé Boursier en recherche Telfer pour un mandat de trois ans en raison de son excellence en recherche. Ses projets de recherche portent sur deux thèmes, soit les causes et les conséquences du conflit entre la vie professionnelle et la vie privée, et les facteurs expliquant pourquoi certains cadres sont de meilleurs leaders que d’autres.

Joanne Leck, Associate Dean (Academics), and her co-investigator, Barbara Orser, Deloitte Professor in the Management of Growth Enterprises, received a $120,000 grant from the SSHRC for their research project entitled Wanted: Mentors. The research seeks to advance our understanding of why mentors take on this role, and provide organizations with mechanisms to encourage key players to mentor others.

Jonathan Linton, Power Corporation Professor in the Management of Technological Enterprises at the Telfer School of Management received a $76,100 grant from SSHRC for his study of the use of new research valuation techniques to gain insights into research assessment and management. He also received $105,000 from NSERC to examine process improvement around new and emerging technologies within and across supply chains.

Wojtek Michalowski, University Research Chair in Health Informatics and Decision Support, received a $100,000 grant from NSERC to research methodologies for integrating clinical information at the point of care in order to enhance emergency department physician decision-making and improve patient care.

Sharon L. O’Sullivan received $25,000 from SSHRC through the Research Development Initiatives (RDI) program for her project International Human Resource Management Challenges and Practices in International Non-Governmental Organizations (INGOs). Professor O’Sullivan seeks, through this project, to understand the particular human resources challenges faced by international non-governmental organizations.

Large Scale Markov Decision Processes in Healthcare Management is the title of Jonathan Patrick’s research project, which was awarded $90,000 by NSERC. The purpose of this research is to develop a mathematical framework for solving large scale stochastic decision problems and capacity planning within the healthcare management.

Ajax Persaud is co-author of the book Marketing, Canadian Edition, with Dhruv Grewal (Virginia Tech), Michael Levy (Babson College) and Shirley Lichti (Wilfrid Laurier University). This book introduces the concept of value in the first chapter and carries it through the entire text. There are numerous examples that define how companies create value for customers through branding, packaging, pricing, retailing, service, and advertising.

For his teaching excellence and a demonstrated commitment to students, Abdul Rahman has been appointed as the Telfer Teaching Fellow. The three-year fellowship will consist of $15,000 per year. Dr. Rahman teaches courses on Corporate Finance, Managerial Economics and Macroeconomic Policy, International Economics at the BCom, MBA and EMBA levels.

Allan Riding, Deloitte Professor in the Management of Growth Enterprises, is the Principal Investigator for the research project Debt Financing and R&D-Intensive SMEs. He received a $85,000 grant from SSHRC. Hi co-investigators are Judith Madill, Paul Desmarais Professor, Tyler Chamberlin, and Mark Freel.

Martine Spence a reçu une subvention de 60 000 $ du CRSH pour développer les modèles des meilleures pratiques pour le développement durable des petites et moyennes entreprises canadiennes. Son projet de recherche, intitulé Développement durable et performance des PME: Des modèles pour le Canada.

Daniel Zéghal a été nommé Boursier en enseignement Welch & Company pour son engagement marqué dans l’enseignement de la comptabilité et pour sa participation active dans ce domaine. Il a également publié un livre intitulé Accounting Thoughts and Practices: Some Unresolved Issues, qui traite des problèmes reliés à la philosophie et aux pratiques comptables qui sont survenus avec le changement et de leurs conséquences sur la perception du public envers la comptabilité.

New Book on Marketing

Ajax Persaud, Associate Professor at the Telfer School of Management, is co-author of the book Marketing, Canadian Edition, with Dhruv Grewal (Virginia Tech), Michael Levy (Babson College) and Shirley Lichti (Wilfrid Laurier University).

The prevalence and power of the internet have created a marketplace of better informed, and savvier, customers than ever before. Those teaching the marketers of tomorrow need to account for the enhanced ability of consumers to assess the marketplace and to discern good value for money.
