Accounting Professor Receives CMA Grant

Ron Eden, Associate Professor at the Telfer School of Management, received a $20,000 grant from the Certified Management Accountants of Ontario (CMA Ontario) for his research project entitled “Investigation of the Use of Management Accounting Information in Canadian Companies”.
Recent evidence suggests that the level of implementation of innovative accounting is low in Canada. This research seeks to establish baselines to examine the implementation of various aspects of both traditional and innovative accounting practices in Canadian organizations.
New Appointments in Accounting
Professor Zéghal teaches accounting theory, management control, cost accounting, and international accounting at both graduate and under graduate levels. He is the Executive Director of the CGA - Accounting Research Centre and is an active member of the Canadian Academic Accounting Association, the European Accounting Association, the Certified General Accountants' Association of Ontario and CGA Canada.
Professor Adjaoud is a member of the Association of Certified General Accountants (CGA) and the Association of Certified Management Accountants (CMA). He acts as an advisor to Telfer School of Management accounting students on behalf of the Ontario and Quebec accounting associations.
Northern Research at the Telfer School of Management
Assistant Professor at the Telfer School of Management, Scott Ensign and his co-investigator Georges E. Sioui, Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Aboriginal studies program at the University of Ottawa, received a $40,000 grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), through the Northern Development Initiative Program for their research project on Canada’s most recent territory: Nunavut.
This territory is facing and is expected to continue to see increasing economic opportunity come its way in the near future. A very real question is to what degree Nunavut’s inhabitants (Nunavummiut) are ready to take advantage of this? This study seeks to assess the current ability of residents of Nunavut to harness prospects for economic prosperity. In particular, entrepreneurial aptitude and entrepreneurial activity will be examined.
The Northern Research Development program responds to the current state of Canadian research in and on the North. The program aims to: support revitalization of existing research and research-related activities; support the development of innovative programs of research and research activities in the North; and also expand the capacity of individual researchers, research groups and institutions to conduct research in the North.
Telfer School of Management professor is appointed University Research Chair
On November 2, 2007, Wojtek Michalowski, Full Professor at the Telfer School of Management, was appointed University Research Chair in Health Informatics and Decision Support.
Professor Michalowski is broadly recognized as a leading expert in the field of decision support. His research focus on the creation and validation of a novel methodological framework for “Anytime and Anywhere”, dubbed MET-A3 decision support for emergency room physician, which can be accessed using any device from a desktop computer to an iPod Touch. Dr. Michalowski plans to test this framework in emergency department triage on cases of worsened childhood asthma.
His research has vast applications in meeting a current need to manage medical information properly, incorporating requirements for patient privacy and maintaining clinical efficiency.
University Research Chairs are established to recognize outstanding accomplishments in research by professors who maintain a solid teaching record, and to provide financial support for research programs of the awardees.
Two new research laboratories
Two new research laboratories have been awarded to Telfer School of Management professors through the Leader’s Opportunity Fund of the Canadian Foundation for Innovation and the Ontario Research Fund.
Directed by Professor Morad Benyoucef, the e-Marketplaces for Safe and Fair Trade (e-MP) Laboratory received funding in the amount of $39,000. The e-MP Lab will research the design, development, and usability of electronic marketplaces (e-marketplaces) as the main trade infrastructures of the future, concentrating on their safety and fairness. The goal of this initiative is to take full advantage of the capabilities of e-business, addressing the frequent lack of trust between trading partners in online business interactions, and providing trading partners with e-negotiation services.
Professor Michalowski’s MET Research: Computing Laboratory to Support Clinical Decision Making at the Point of Care in the Emergency Department received $104,000 in funding. The laboratory will support research on providing decision support to emergency physicians at the point of care by facilitating access to a distributed repository of shared data and clinical knowledge. For this project, Dr. Michalowski partnered with scientists from the University of Ottawa School of Information Technology and Engineering (SITE) and the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO).
The Telfer School of Management is looking forward to the exciting research projects that will come from these high tech laboratories and congratulates both researchers for their dedication and creativity.
