Greg Richards Presented at University of Ottawa Conference on Use of Digital Technologies in Healthcare
Professor Greg Richards chaired a workshop at the University of Ottawa’s Digital Transformation 4.0 Conference on the use of information technologies in patient-centred healthcare. Director of the IBM Centre for Business Analytics and Performance at the Telfer School, professor Richards chaired a session titled “Identifying challenges in healthcare that can be resolved through collaboration with technology companies.”
The Digital Transformation 4.0 Conference held in Ottawa on October 30 focused on the use of digital technologies in optimizing patient-engagement and patient-focused care. The event brought together a diverse group of leaders and organizations including: the VP Research, University of Ottawa, Technology Transfer and Business Enterprise, University of Ottawa (TTBE), the CEOs of the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario and the Queensway Carleton Hospital, the VP Innovation and Business Development at CHEO, MDI Solutions, CAE Inc., the Whitestone Group, the Canadian Association for People Centred Health, and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC).
Healthcare is now the largest single item in government expenditures and plays an important role in our community and in Canada’s society. We are at a cross-road in the utilization of health information technologies in healthcare, moving from institutional legacy systems, to mobile bed-side applications for the healthcare provider, to patient- and consumer-centric tools. Leaders from the healthcare sector, academia, and industry discussed the challenges and new opportunities related to the use of information technologies in healthcare.

Professor Mark Freel Takes a Closer Look at Output Driven Innovation
What approaches to innovation provide the foundation for identifying and creating value? The question was explored by Professor Mark Freel in a masterclass titled “Output Driven Innovation – Making Innovation Accessible [This link is no longer available]” given at Lancaster University Management School (LUMS), in England last September.
One of Professor Mark Freel’s main research interests is the question of how “new value” can be an alternative or complementary innovation within business. He examines the importance of understanding the nature of value: what it is, what it’s worth and who defines it.
Mark Freel is the RBC Financial Group Professor in the Commercialization of Innovation at the Telfer School and a Visiting Fellow of the Institute for Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development at LUMS. Professor Doug Angus Helped Develop the 2013-16 Cardiovascular Health Plan for Champlain Region
Professor Doug Angus of the Telfer School was a member of the Strategic Planning Leadership Committee for the 2013-2016 cardiovascular health plan for Champlain region. The Champlain Cardiovascular Disease Network Strategy and Action Plan launched earlier this month is designed to mitigate the costs and the negative health outcomes of cardiovascular disease, the number one cost driver in Ontario’s healthcare budget. The plan is a roadmap for how partners in primary care, public health, acute care, and community settings will work together to address cardiovascular disease. Five strategic directions are identified to improve the cardiovascular health of Champlain residents and build a system of excellence in cardiovascular disease prevention that can serve as a model for the province of Ontario and Canada.
Doug Angus is a Full Professor in the Telfer School with expertise in health economics and health policy. He has research activities at the international, national, provincial and regional levels in areas related to health economics, health policy, program evaluation and health care management. Professor Angus recently served as a member of one of the expert working groups which helped produced a report on the issue of resident duty hours for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
