Objective of the Professional Development Program

The objective of the Professional Development Program is to provide all students registered in our BCom curriculum with personal and professional development opportunities comprised of integrated courses, workshops and complementary extra-curricular activities to be carried out over the entire duration of their undergraduate studies.

Design of the Professional Development Program

The Professional Development Program is introduced to students in their first year though the Telfer School’s annual Leaders Reception. The Telfer Leaders Reception takes place during the third week of September and brings together first year students, senior student leaders, peer mentors, professors, and industry executives. The event also introduces key leadership activities that students can undertake at the Telfer School and the event is capped off with a keynote address from an industry executive who speaks to the theme of personal and professional development.

From there, the professional development workshops are taught in specific common core courses throughout the four-year BCom program. The courses have been selected based on content that is already taught.

The Professional Development Program is integrated into common core courses under the following themes:

JA Business Basics (Grade 5): Introduces students to the fundamental concepts of business in a community and global context — likely their first exposure to these concepts. Students explore the many aspects of business through dynamic hands-on activities. Raise awareness of entrepreneurship as a potential career option. Plant the seeds.
