The Telfer School of Management is thrilled to present this year’s Established Researcher Award to Professor Ana Maria Peredo, a management scholar whose transformative work has brought significant attention to the School.

The award recognizes professors who have received national or international recognition for their research contributions to the Telfer School of Management over the past five years.

Since joining Telfer in 2022, Peredo has been committed to revolutionizing management research by integrating social impact, specifically, by including Indigenous experiences.

Peredo’s research delves into unexplored areas, focusing on Indigenous entrepreneurship, community-based entrepreneurship and alternative economies. Indeed, she was awarded a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Connection Grant to advance Indigenous research in management.

Peredo was appointed a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Social and Inclusive Entrepreneurship, which is only granted to the most accomplished and promising researchers in the country. This appointment will bring $1.4 million to Telfer and uOttawa over seven years.

Peredo pioneered the International Academy for Research in Indigenous Management and Organization Studies (IARIMOS), which fosters research on Indigenous entrepreneurship. The inaugural IARIMOS conference, held in August 2023, brought together emerging scholars from 13 nations, 29 mentors, five Indigenous elders and five community leaders. The academy has encouraged management research to focus on social impact and incorporate Indigenous experiences.

Peredo has published in many prestigious journals, such as the Journal of Business Venturing, and has contributed academic book chapters and co-edited journals. Her advocacy on social issues can be seen through her current co-authorship of four special journal issues focusing on topics such as equity, diversity, decolonization, environmental justice and Indigenous perspectives. Beyond academic publishing, she also plans conferences, both national and international.

Peredo is committed to the future generation of researchers, co-authoring many research articles with her students and involving them in prestigious conference presentations. Through IARIMOS, she has shown her commitment to both formal and informal training of emerging scholars, many of whom wouldn’t have had the required support otherwise.

As well, IARIMOS itself offers innovative training opportunities, allowing students to work with and learn about Indigenous research perspectives and methodologies from local Indigenous communities. IARIMOS’s second annual meeting, which will take place in August, has already attracted 30 submissions from emerging researchers across Canada and elsewhere.

Peredo’s dedication and many contributions to innovative research are an inspiration to aspiring academics and researchers.  She is leading research in new fields and helping the Telfer school grow and honour our commitment to Indigenous research perspectives. We’re proud to have her as a member of our faculty and confer on her this distinguished award. Congratulations, Professor Peredo!
