Northern Research at the Telfer School of Management

Assistant Professor at the Telfer School of Management, Scott Ensign and his co-investigator Georges E. Sioui, Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Aboriginal studies program at the University of Ottawa, received a $40,000 grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), through the Northern Development Initiative Program for their research project on Canada’s most recent territory: Nunavut.

This territory is facing and is expected to continue to see increasing economic opportunity come its way in the near future. A very real question is to what degree Nunavut’s inhabitants (Nunavummiut) are ready to take advantage of this? This study seeks to assess the current ability of residents of Nunavut to harness prospects for economic prosperity. In particular, entrepreneurial aptitude and entrepreneurial activity will be examined.

The Northern Research Development program responds to the current state of Canadian research in and on the North. The program aims to: support revitalization of existing research and research-related activities; support the development of innovative programs of research and research activities in the North; and also expand the capacity of individual researchers, research groups and institutions to conduct research in the North.
