Biography

Martine Spence was named a professor emerita at the Telfer School of Management of the University of Ottawa, after a 22-year career as a professor of marketing and entrepreneurship at the school. Dr. Spence has held a number of research fellowships from Canadian, British and supranational organizations for her work on international entrepreneurship and sustainable entrepreneurship in Canada and in emerging and developing nations. Professor Spence’s research has led to the publication in English and in French of two co-authored books, several book chapters, papers at international conference and articles in scholarly journals such as Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, Small Business Economics, Management International Review, the International Business Review, the European Marketing Journal, the Revue internationale PME and the Canadian Journal of Administrative Sciences.

Professor Spence holds a PhD in management from Middlesex University London and an MBA from Concordia University, Montreal. She has taught strategic management, international marketing, marketing research and entrepreneurship for bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programs in Ottawa, as well as in the U.K., France and Monaco. During her career at the Telfer School of Management, she was head of the marketing section and vice-dean research.

She remains active in research, co-supervising a doctoral candidate from the Université de Yaoundé II, in Cameroon, and sitting on the thesis committees of many other students. Her articles in progress deal with development through the zero growth of three small enterprises, “co-opetition,” and sustainable development and SMEs.
