Professor Magda Donia and lead researcher Alexandra-Joëlle Panaccio of Concordia University’s John Molson School of Business will study servant leadership in diverse cultural contexts through a grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Council of Canada (SSHRC).
Servant leadership theory proposes that leaders who engage in altruistic or selfless behaviours help nurture positive employee behaviours, but little is known about the mechanisms that underlie that relationship. The researchers will therefore examine the mediating role of employee attitudes, and the moderating role of cultural context in the manifestations and impact of servant leadership behaviours. They will also look into how servant leadership may, over time, influence followers to themselves engage in organizational citizenship behaviours for altruistic motives.

This year’s Bromley Memorial Event was a huge success. Hosted by the Institute for Science, Society and Policy (ISSP) at the University of Ottawa, the event welcomed as its keynote speaker one of North America’s leading thinkers on science policy. It laid the groundwork for a new science, technology and innovation community with its secretariat at ISSP, the Ingenuity G20 + network. And it brought together almost 30 international visitors including faculty and graduate students from 14 countries for three packed days of research enrichment, policy discussion, and networking.
The team behind the conference, May 14-16, included Jonathan Linton, Power Corporation Professor in the Management of Technological Enterprises at the Telfer School of Management and an ISSP Core Member, Nicholas Vonortas, Professor of Economics and International Affairs and Director of the Center for International Science and Technology Policy at George Washington University, and Marc Saner, Director of the ISSP.
The centrepiece of the event was the D. Allan Bromley Memorial Lecture presented by William Bonvillian, “Bringing Advanced Innovation to The Manufacturing Sector.” Bonvillian is director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Washington, D.C. office, where he works to support MIT’s strong and historic relations with federal R&D agencies and its role in national science policy.
On May 14, Dr. Howard Alper, chairman of the Science, Technology and Innovation Council, and the Hon. Gary Goodyear, Minister of State for Science and Technology, addressed the conference and there were also discussions of science and technology policy in Canada, Israel, and Turkey. Policy dialogue on May 15 centred on China, France, U.K. and the U.S. May 16 featured presentations by Gilles Patry, President of the Canadian Foundation for Innovation, and Margaret McCuaig-Johnston, Executive Vice-President of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, as well as policy talks on Germany, India, Taiwan, Mexico, Russia and South Africa.
Providing another focal point was the Ingenuity G20 + network. Faculty discussed how this new initiative based at the Institute for Science, Society and Policy will be used to promote international collaboration and advance relationships between universities and national government policymakers.

Historians have begun to make inroads into business schools, demonstrating that past business decisions can offer valuable lessons for the present. Their research is proving that businesspeople face the same fundamental challenges as their historical counterparts – finding partners, establishing commercial networks, making investments, generating profits. In that vein the Telfer School welcomes Dr. Dilfuza Kasimova, who is interested in both the history of accounting practices and Japanese management accounting.
An assistant professor at Hitotsubashi University’s Graduate School of Commerce and Management, Dr. Kasimova presented her research titled “Early Management Accounting Practices in Japan – the Case of the Mitsubishi Mail Steamship Company” on May 16. Dr. Kasimova is here on a two-month research stay at the invitation of Cheryl S. McWatters, Father Edgar Thivierge Chair in Business History, and Daniel Zéghal of the CGA Accounting Research Centre.

Saturday, May 12, we all celebrated the 5th anniversary of Ian Telfer's transformative gift to the School. The event was an opportunity to highlight the repercussions of the biggest donation ever made to a Canadian business school and was a great success in many ways. More than 165 members of staff, professors, alumni, students and friends of the Telfer School were present to show support and appreciation to Mr. Telfer and the numerous impacts his involvement has had on so many students.
In his speech, Dean Julien referred to a few of the Telfer School accomplishments, such as becoming one of about fifty triple-crown schools in the world, winning various academic competitions and the launch of improved programs adapted to current needs. To mark the 5-year anniversary, Dean Julien presented Ian Telfer with a custom-made album featuring a brief history of the University and of Mr. Telfer’s family, his years at the University of Ottawa and the evolution of the School ever since.
As an expression of our great appreciation, the University of Ottawa also presented Ian Telfer with a recreation of the first keys to the original wood structure that housed Bytown College in 1848. These keys, replicated using the ancient lost wax process, are a symbol of the University of Ottawa’s commitment to keeping its storied past alive.
Other events are being organized to celebrate Ian Telfer’s commitment to the Telfer School including alumni receptions in Halifax on June 4 and in Paris, on June 9.

Russ Morgan is a Telfer School of Management alumnus that likes to keep busy. Aside from his professional life as a strategy and marketing professional, over the last three years he has started and run a non-profit alongside his brother and a small board. Dedicated to eliminating poverty in the developing world, Building Walls of Wisdom (BuildWoW) has been committed to creating educational opportunities through the construction of schools.
During his tenure at the Telfer School of Management, Russ was the president of the winning Undergraduate Business Games team [This link is no longer available], as well as a four-year executive on the University of Ottawa Marketing Association, now the Telfer Marketing Association. Russ learned early on that going above and beyond what is expected of you can be incredibly rewarding.
One of the biggest rewards Russ received was on a recent trip to visit all BuildWoW projects underway in Africa. He was able to see first-hand the very real difference that his organization, inclusive of its numerous contributors, has made in various communities. In a recent reflection of his trip, he wrote the following:
“At the end of the day we are all people; people that work, people that laugh, and people that want the best for their children. The only difference is where we are born and the resources that are available. For those of us who live in a country where resources and education are abundant, we have a responsibility to help those communities with less.”
Russ is a firm believer that his business education has greatly contributed to his organization's success. With a BCom in Marketing, Russ has been able to apply a number of strategic frameworks to help BuildWoW grow. In addition, Russ continues to support doing more -“Everyone within our organization, myself included, work on a volunteer basis. I have seen first-hand that individuals can provoke change no matter what profession they choose.”
To see Russ in action, we invite you to watch the video explaining the current Building Walls of Wisdom project in Northern Ghana.
About Building Walls of Wisdom
Launched on April 1st, 2009, Building Walls of Wisdom was created in an effort to make a small impact in the world of extreme poverty. The construction of schools is one of the most significant ways to tackle this issue. Building Walls of Wisdom creates educational opportunities one school at a time. Its original and very modest goal was to build 10 schools in 10 years. Today, they are in the midst of raising funds for their 7th project. To date, Building Walls of Wisdom has been responsible for the construction of schools in Kenya, Ecuador, Sri Lanka, and Ghana.

Sylvain Durocher has been awarded a $10,000 grant from CGA-Canada and the Canadian Academic Accounting Association (CAAA) to research “Comprehensive Income Information: A User’s Perspective.” Dr. Durocher, Logan Katz Fellow and Associate Professor at the Telfer School, focuses his research on accounting standard-setting, studying it from different theoretical perspectives.
His new project, with Anne Fortin of the Department of Accounting at Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), will examine the use of comprehensive income information by financial statement users. It will also assess whether the reporting format can have an impact on their judgments and decisions. To date there is limited empirical evidence about the actual use of OCI by financial statement users in their financial analyses.
The researchers will add to the debate on comprehensive income, enrich the literature comparing professional and nonprofessional investors, provide valuable data on the impact of the two current reporting formats on users’ judgments and decisions, and contribute new insights on the impact of actuarial gains and losses – an important OCI item – on users’ judgments and decisions.

Micheál Kelly, former Dean of the Telfer School of Management (2000-2010), has been named as Dean at Wilfrid Laurier University’s School of Business & Economics. His mandate will start in July. We wish him the best of luck in his new endeavour.
The Wilfrid Laurier University News Release follows below.
April 30, 2012 - WATERLOO – Micheál Kelly, a professor of Strategic and International Management and former dean at the Telfer School of Management at the University of Ottawa, has been named the dean of the Laurier School of Business & Economics (SBE).
Kelly, who will join Laurier in July, is a respected academic who helped transform the Telfer School into a leading centre for management education and research. He is also a highly sought-after consultant in the technology sector, and has extensive experience in government.
"Attracting a dean of the calibre befitting Laurier's excellent School of Business & Economics was no mean feat,” said Deborah MacLatchy, vice-president: academic and provost. “Micheál Kelly’s broad experience – in government, as an advisor to businesses, and as an academic leader – makes him an ideal fit for Laurier."
Kelly will be taking over from Professor William Banks, who has served as acting dean since Feb. 1, 2011.
“We are very grateful to Bill for stepping up when needed and serving as dean on an interim basis while the search for a full-time candidate was conducted,” said MacLatchy.
Laurier’s commitment to providing an outstanding educational experience for its students is just one of the many reasons that attracted Kelly to SBE, he said. In addition, he is impressed by Laurier’s efforts to become a leader in education and research.
“Laurier’s SBE has a great reputation among Canadian business schools for the quality of its students, faculty, programs, research and alumni,” said Kelly. “All of the ingredients are there to build an institution of global significance and prominence.”
Kelly served as dean at Telfer from 2000 to 2010. Under his leadership the school earned three major international accreditations, known as the “Triple Crown”. The accreditations indicate that every aspect of a business school – from its activities and programs to its mission and corporate governance – has been thoroughly evaluated and meets the highest standards of excellence. It was also during this time that Telfer received the largest naming endowment ever for a Canadian business school.
Currently, Kelly is professor of Strategic and International Management at the Telfer School. His recent academic research focuses on the management of global innovation systems, research and development alliances, and the competitive strategies of technology-based firms. He advises technology companies around the world on foreign investment strategies, alliance management and financing international expansions.
Prior to joining the University of Ottawa in 1998, Kelly held senior positions with the Government of Canada in various departments including foreign affairs, international trade, industry, and science and technology.
Kelly has a Bachelor of Arts in Foreign Affairs and Economics from Assumption College in Worcester, Massachusetts; a Master of Science in Political Science-International Relations from the University of Ottawa; and a Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science from Carleton University.

This year for the very first time, the Telfer School of Management awarded two new donor recognition awards at the 3rd Annual Donor Appreciation Event for the faculty’s donors.
Every day we strive to improve our relationships with donors, demonstrate our appreciation and create meaningful relationships with those in our community who choose us amongst a sea of giving opportunities. Both of our recipients are wonderful examples of the kind of donor the Telfer School of Management holds every year. Through their generosity and ongoing commitment to the School they have chosen to step out of their daily routine to make a difference in someone else’s life.
Our first new award is the Young Donor of the Year Award. We have worked hard to stay in touch with our younger graduates and to follow and celebrate their success, while encouraging their ongoing engagement with their alma mater. Giving can be an important part of demonstrating support.
This award recognizes a donor 30 years or younger who has demonstrated a commitment to the Telfer School through a long-time and ongoing gift. Most young graduates are thinking about their careers and simply being in their 20’s. Our recipient this evening is an exception, she starting giving just 3 years after graduating in 2005, and has been giving monthly ever since. She was an involved student, a scholarship recipient in her time, and she’s recently become an entrepreneur. This year, Melinda Cesario Assaf (BCom 2005).
The Telfer Donor of the Year Award is intended to recognize and honour a donor who has gone above and beyond helping others through a history of giving, an ongoing commitment to the School, and who has had significant impact on both the Telfer School and its students. This year’s honouree Jeffrey Smith completed a BAdm in 1978 and Bachelor’s of Management Science in 1979. Jeffrey is a valued donor with a history of giving to the Telfer School dating back 25 years. In 2007 he and his wife Elaine Wilson decided to create the Albert and Margery Smith Scholarship at the Telfer School to honour his hardworking and supportive parents. To date Jeffrey and his wife have donated over $50,000 supporting scholarships for students coming from non-urban centers to get their business degree at the Telfer School of Management. Laura Recoskie and her team members (Steven Recoskie and Sébastien Touchette) won 1st place in the graduate students category of the 2012 PEI Student Competition organized by the Faculty of Engineering. Their challenge was to develop a portable, low cost and long endurance system capable of providing crisis management solutions and search and rescue support. The product solution that was presented is an autonomous, low cost, hybrid powered, dirigible, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), capable of operating up to 96 hours. Because it uses commercially available components and a modular design, it is cheaper to produce and it can be adapted to other devices according to specific mission objectives.

In today’s world, it is essential for management students to acquire a global orientation. The international exchange programs of the Telfer School of Management provide just such an opportunity. Students can complete their academic and professional endeavours in another institution abroad and at the same time discover another country, a new culture and different customs. Furthermore, students who take part in this experience bring back unforgettable memories. The international outreach of the Telfer School is stronger than ever through agreements and partnerships with 37 institutions in 20 different countries!
In the Fall 2011 semester, many students left Ottawa for a unique experience, they are sharing their story with us.
Ali Babul – City University of Hong Kong
"Overall, my exchange to Hong Kong was amazing. Hong Kong is the epitome of East meets West, as you will surely find out. The people you meet here are wonderful; the culture you are submerged in is different but intriguing; and studying in HK is completely different than studying back home. It is a unique opportunity, especially for those at Telfer, to come to a booming economy on the other side of the world. My experience was stellar, so much so that I would love to come back and live here!"
Jennifer Viscosi – University of Mannheim
"My exchange semester has been one of the best of my life. I have met truly incredible people, learned a lot about a culture I was unfamiliar with, learned a new language, travelled to places I never thought I would go and have truly experienced a once in a lifetime opportunity. I was really able to learn a lot about myself and the world that surrounds me, which is why I would encourage everyone to take advantage of this opportunity. It takes a lot of planning and it may be stressful and scary at times, however in the end it’s worth it!"
Jennifer is currently studying at The University of Sydney in Australia on her second exchange.

On April 16th, Professor Cheryl S. McWatters launched the Father Edgar Thivierge Speaker Series with an engaging and wide-ranging dialogue with the Right Honourable Mr. Martin. It was a rare opportunity for students to meet informally with Mr. Martin to discuss Aboriginal education, business, and entrepreneurship.
Mr. Martin served as Canada’s 21st Prime Minister from 2003 to 2006; our Minister of Finance from 1993 to 2002, and represented Lasalle-Émard, Quebec as its Member of Parliament from 1988 until his retirement from politics in 2008. Since his retirement from politics, he has devoted his energies, through the Martin Aboriginal Initiative, to working with our First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples to enhance their quality of life, educational and economic outcomes, while respecting and protecting their identity and traditions. Beyond our borders, Mr. Martin co-chairs the Congo Basin Rainforest Fund, sits on the advisory council of the Coalition for Dialogue on Africa, and is a member of the IMF’s Western Hemisphere Regional Advisory Group.
Discussions of post-colonial legacies in Dr. McWatters’ MBA course,The Global Context of Business: Merchants, Traders, Capitalists and Profit Seekers, provided the impetus to invite Mr. Martin to meet with her students to share his insights into one of the most critical challenges facing our nation – and future business leaders – how to ensure our Aboriginal peoples reap the social and economic benefits enjoyed by other Canadians. We were honoured to have our University President, Mr. Allan Rock, in attendance to introduce Mr. Martin and to participate in the discussions.
Mr. Martin opened with comments on the importance of business history, and linked understanding of the past with many of the issues we presently face around the globe and within Canada. For the next 90 minutes, he spoke passionately about the UN’s mandate on The Responsibility to Protect (R2P) and how we, as Canadians, need to reflect on its meaning with respect to our own treatment of Aboriginal peoples. He offered wisdom in terms of how we might move ahead with our Aboriginal communities to ensure their participation as equal partners, recognising, embracing and celebrating their cultures. Mr. Martin also spoke on very practical terms of the need for education, funds for entrepreneurial activities, and specifics such as set-asides for procurement for Aboriginal businesses.
Those in attendance came from many parts of the globe, which played to Mr. Martin’s vast experience and work with global agencies and governments. We could have extended the discussion much longer; yet when we had to bring it to a close, we did so leaving much enriched for the experience.

This year marks the 5-year anniversary of the Telfer School’s transformative naming gift. A reception will be held on May 12, 2012 at the Château Laurier in Ottawa to celebrate the occasion with special guests Ian Telfer and his wife Nancy Burke.
On May 8, 2007, the University of Ottawa announced that Ian Telfer, Chairman of Goldcorp Inc. and a 1976 graduate of the school’s MBA program, had pledged a $25-million naming gift to the School of Management. In recognition of his donation, the school was renamed in his honour.
“The reason I am so proud to support the School of Management at the University of Ottawa is because I have experienced firsthand the positive impact the School can have on the lives of its alumni. Over 30 years ago the School of Management made an investment in me ─ now it's my turn to return the favour and make an investment in the School” said Mr. Telfer at the time of the donation.
To this day, Mr. Telfer’s donation is the largest gift in University of Ottawa history, the most generous donation ever granted in the National Capital Region and the biggest private gift ever made to name a Canadian business school.
"It is hard to believe it has been five years since I re-connected with the University of Ottawa” said Mr. Telfer. “I am very fortunate to have this wonderful association with the incredible students, faculty, and staff that make the Telfer School of Management such a great institution."

In 2010, the Telfer School, in collaboration with IBM, created the IBM Centre for Business Analytics and Performance. As of today, the total investment by IBM to close to $12 million.
In the past 5 years, students from the Telfer School have excelled in student competitions:

· Happening Marketing Champions in 2010
· Jeux du commerce Champions in 2009 and 2012
· Winners of the Academic Cup at the Jeux du commerce for 5 consecutive years, from 2008 to 2012
“We are indeed celebrating 5 years of success” said Dean François Julien. “We are celebrating the success of our innovative programs, our professors’ research and the outstanding student experience that we offer.”

When Kyle Moncrief arrived in Ottawa two years ago as an international student from Florida, settling into a new environment proved to be an understandably overwhelming experience. Like many before, he felt he did not possess the necessary confidence and know-how to effectively penetrate the Canadian job market. Fortunately, Kyle enlisted the help of the Career Center team and through his judicious and enthusiastic use of the resources at his disposal, he was able to land a stimulating position in his field of study.
Kyle took full advantage of the Career Center services: he attended as many workshops and events as possible and met with the career counsellor to cover key aspects of career planning as well as to identify tailored objectives and strategies. This equipped him with indispensable career development skills, expanded his professional network in Ottawa and instilled in him the kind of confidence every candidate needs to successfully rise to the challenges of job searching.
In August 2012, Kyle will not only complete a BCom in Finance, he will also be launching his career within the prestigious TD Securities Services Associate program. Although only one semester remains for him here at Telfer School of Management, we are glad to know that he intends to remain involved and we look forward to tracking what will undoubtedly be his distinguished career.

The 2nd Annual Legacy Conference took place on November 12, 2011 at Ottawa City Hall. The conference was created by Mohammad Al Azzouni and hosted in part by the Telfer School of Management's newest club; SIFE uOttawa.
Through nothing but passion, the team wanted to motivate and inspire students to go out and create their own “legacy” through speakers such as Gus Takkale, author of 5 Cs to Change, and Tracey Clarke, Managing Director of Bridgehead.
The students also participated in a very intense panel discussion on How to Raise Capital for your Startup, where Harley Finklestein from Ottawa’s fastest growing start-up Shopify, Scott Annan, founder of Mercurygrove, and Ron Warburton, Managing Director at BDC Venture Capital.
Five workshops with topics ranging from Effective Presentation to Business Designing were then facilitated by many of Ottawa’s bright entrepreneurs, including Telfer School alumnus, Kyle Braatz. This equipped students with life skills to then go out and create.
Ian Scott, Economic Development Officer of the City of Ottawa said “This conference had the perfect balance of entertainment, information, and connection. You were always excited to what was next. Congratulations on an excellent conference”.
Most importantly, the conference wanted to bridge the gap between faculties. Many students from the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Social Sciences came out and connected with Telfer School students. “By all measures, the conference was a huge success!” said Mohammad Al Azzouni.

Mona Fortier, who obtained her MBA in 1998 and received the Telfer School of Management’s Young Achiever Award in 2011, was named an “associate” of the Compagnie des Cents-Associés francophones in recognition of her exceptional contribution to the promotion and development of French-Canadian culture.
Community involvement and volunteer work have been a part of Mona Fortier’s life since adolescence. Having come from a military Franco-Ontarian family, Mona quickly understood the importance of personal involvement in contributing to the development and growth of Francophones in Ontario and elsewhere in Canada. Over the years, Mona shared her expertise and desire for change with many organizations. Franco-Ontarian youth, education, health, municipal, provincial and federal politics, cultural organizations and cooperative Francophone institutions are all areas in which she has been involved. She has demonstrated leadership on various boards of directors and strategic advisory boards by creating new initiatives and boosting some large-scale projects.
The mission of the Compagnie des Cents-Associés francophones is to give recognition to Canadians who have done exemplary volunteer work to promote and develop French-Canadian culture.
The Compagnie des Cent-Associés francophones takes its name from the Compagnie des Cent-Associés founded in 1627 by Cardinal Richelieu to promote the development of New France. At that time, the Compagnie members represented the elite of French aristocracy and wanted to “spread the principles of the Christian faith and take the glorious French culture all the way to the New World. “*
Inspired by these objectives, the Association canadienne d’Éducation de langue française gave this name to an association whose purpose was to pay tribute to the elite of French Canadians. The Compagnie was established in Quebec, in 1979, during the 32nd convention of the Association canadienne d’Éducation de langue française.

The Canadian Taskforce for Women’s Business Growth is calling for governments at all levels to do more to support Canadian women entrepreneurs. Describing such efforts as an essential strategy for sustained economic growth in Canada, the Taskforce says that a 20% increase in total revenues among majority female-owned enterprises will contribute an additional $2 billion a year to the Canadian economy.
“Women-led businesses in Canada represent a huge economic opportunity for our country,” says Barbara Orser, chair of the Taskforce and Deloitte Professor at the University of Ottawa’s Telfer School of Management. “Majority women-owned small and medium-sized enterprises represent over $117 billion per annum of economic activity in Canada.” The Taskforce also reports that women-owned firms fail to grow as quickly as firms led by men. These differences are reflected in Canada’s productivity and competitiveness.
Industry Canada reports that, in 2007, 47 percent of Canada’s 1.6 million small and medium-sized enterprises(SMEs) were wholly or partly owned by women, and sixteen percent of Canadian SMEs were exclusively owned by women. In addition, more than 900,000 of the 2.6 million self-employed workers in Canada are women. However, the average revenue of majority female-owned firms was $563,000 compared with $1,126,000 for majority male-owned firms.
The Taskforce is calling for a concerted effort to mobilize this underdeveloped segment of our economy through a five-point strategy, that is:
- create a national women-focused economic development strategy
- create business-stimulation programs to develop new markets and grow globally
- create and implement measureable supplier-diversity procurement objectives for all federal agencies and departments
- enhance women’s financial literacy and their awareness of gender influences in firm capitalization through training and other incentives
- increase the adoption of technology in women-led firms through training and other incentives.
About the Taskforce
The Taskforce for Women’s Business Growth is a national and non-partisan consortium of prominent female business owners, small-business service agencies, academics and industry associations. Founded in 2009, the Taskforce aims to accelerate the growth of women’s enterprises through the creation of appropriate public policy, advocacy, research, and sharing of best practices. In 2010 and 2011, the Taskforce for Women’s Business Growth initiated a series of roundtables across Canada to identify policies and programs to speed the growth and success of women business owners and self-employed workers. Participants included more than 200 prominent women business owners and self-employed workers, industry-association representatives, academics and other thought leaders.

James Bowen co-founded a technology company when he was 21 years of age. He had little guidance or mentorship to draw upon. In those days technology companies were a relatively new phenomenon and advice for start-ups wasn't readily available.
Years later, now the owner of a successful software services firm and an adjunct Professor at the Telfer School of Management, University of Ottawa, Dr. Bowen has drawn on those early experiences and authored a book to help entrepreneurs.
In 2009, the book “The Entrepreneurial Effect”, a collection of articles by prominent Ottawa area technology entrepreneurs, including James Bowen, was published. It included a foreword contributed by Terry Matthews and the list of contributors reads like a who’s who of the industry.
On November 8, 2011, the Waterloo tech community will be launching Volume II of this book, featuring a distinguished list of Waterloo entrepreneurs and investors offering their advice.
The Waterloo version's foreword is written by Dr. Feridun Hamdullahpur, President, University of Waterloo and contains insights by: John Baker, James Bowen, Larry Borsato, Dave Caputo, Stephen Carkner, Yvan Couture, Ray dePaul, Rick Endrula, Jim Estill, Harley Finkelstein, Rod Foster, Vita Gaisma, Josie Graham, Brydon Gilliss, Ted Hasting, Cameron Hay, Kevin Hood, Tom Hunter, Iain Klugman, Dan Latendre, Carol Leaman, Aurelien Leftick, Moren Levesque. Randall Litchfield. Steven McCartney, Andrew Maxwell, Mike Morrice, Robert Pavlis, Roger Skubowius, William M. Tatham, Robert Tong, Adam Zimmer, and Ann Zimmer.
Proceeds from the sale of the book will go to support student technology entrepreneurship.

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) awarded $79,320 to principal investigator Dr. Guy Paré, HEC Montreal, and his co-investigator Dr. Mirou Jaana, Telfer School of Management, for their research program entitled Revisiting IT Innovation Research: A Research Program in Healthcare Organization.
The objective of this research program is to provide a fresh perspective to the field of information technology (IT) innovation. It investigates two novel constructs, “innovation configurations” and “organization mindfulness”, and applies them to the IT innovation process in Canadian healthcare organizations.
In the first part of the research program, the researchers will make a qualitative comparative analysis of identified combinations of conditions linked to the electronic medical record (EMR) systems successful / failed adoption by Quebec family medicine groups. In the second part of the program, they will conduct a review of empirical research published in medical informatics to identify the extent to which EMR impact research is aligned with the notion of causal structures. Last, they will perform a retrospective analysis of the approach used to implement a similar EMR software system in hospitals in Quebec and Ontario.
This research will impact both theory and practice by expanding knowledge beyond a static and narrow perspective of innovation, and by gaining a better understanding of the conditions that facilitate the IT innovation process.

Social Responsibility at the Telfer School
Students at the Telfer School of Management continue to develop novel ways to support community engagement and social development in our city, in our country and throughout the world. Here are a few examples of activities from the past year.
12th Annual CASCO Charity Event
- CASCO, the Telfer School’s student charity organization, raised $29,000 for the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario at the group’s twelfth annual gala. Attended by hundreds of businesspeople, local leaders and Telfer School students and faculty members, the enormously popular celebration featured a three-course meal, silent and live auctions, and a high-energy dance and musical performance.
- A team of Telfer EMBA students and alumni raised some $10,000 by participating in the tenth annual 24h Tremblant, the largest fundraising ski event in Eastern North America.
- Four Telfer School students—Josée Archambault, Dmitry Berlin, Sarah Claytonand Steve Nyenkamp—raised more than $9,500 for Operation Come Home, a local charity that helps young homeless people. The five’s remarkable fundraising achievement was part of 5 Days for the Homeless, a charity campaign in which university students live "homeless" on campus to raise money and create greater awareness of homelessness.
- Five Telfer MBA students joined forces to prepare an official response to the Federal Sustainable Development Strategyconsultation paper. Overall, the students gave the federal strategy passing marks: great goals and objectives. Yet the strategy has some drawbacks: linkages to implementation are unclear, and efforts to develop better tracking metrics and indicators were probably insufficient.

Social Networks Users and their Influence on Marketing Campaigns
Congratulations to Telfer professor Morad Benyoucef, and Amir Afrasiabi Rad, Ph.D. candidate in the School of Information Technology and Engineering (SITE), who were awarded a Mitacs-Accelerate Graduate Internship grant in the amount of $60,000. The two-year project, entitled Increasing Marketing Campaign Performance Using Influential Users in Social Networks, is sponsored by IBM Canada Ltd.
The project responds to the explosive growth of social media. Massive participation in social networks turned them into an important hub of information reflected in the countless number of opinions, news and product reviews that are constantly posted and discussed on sites such as Facebook, Digg, Twitter, etc. The ability to track user generated content on social networks and its propagation within user communities have created an opportunity to follow and predict market trends. The objective of this project is to detect and classify influential users on social networks with the aim that they may influence their friends and followers. Results are expected to be useful for businesses when designing their marketing campaigns.
“Mitacs-Accelerate is Canada’s premiere research internship program. It connects companies with over 50 research-based universities through graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, who apply their specialized expertise to business research challenges. Interns transfer their skills from theory to real-world application, while the companies gain a competitive advantage by accessing high-quality research expertise.”

12 hours. 120 teams. 1 disease.
On June 17, CASCO and JDC played their part in celebrating cancer survivors, remembering loved ones lost to cancer, and fighting back in hopes to find a cure to a terrible disease. Representing the Telfer School of Management, CASCO and JDC took part in the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life Orleans edition. From 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. the students walked, jogged, and ran the night away raising money to combat cancer, giving hope to a more promising future for those diagnosed with the disease.
The night possessed a full docket of entertainment including music, dancers, singers, and a band. With food tents set up and even free massages given on site, there was plenty to keep everyone busy. At dusk when all the luminaries were lit, a remembrance ceremony was held for all those who lost their battles with cancer. With the night sky lit by candle light and moon light, two cancer survivors recounted their battle with the deadly disease and both ended with a very simple yet powerful message – Always live your life to its fullest because you never know when you won’t have that opportunity again.
Relay for Life was a huge success. Both CASCO and JDC contributed immensely and had a load of fun in the process. The Orleans event raised 299,000 dollars and all of Ottawa raised nearly 1 million dollars in the fight against cancer. I think it’s safe to say that Relay for Life will be an event both associations will take part in again next year!

Ottawa, ON – IBM and the Telfer School of Management at the University of Ottawa today announced IBM is increasing its investment in the Ottawa-based Centre for Business Analytics and Performance the two organizations created in April 2010.
Building on early academic and research success, the new IBM investment of $7.9 million in business analytics software will help accelerate research around situational, social media, healthcare operations and ecological/environmental monitoring. It will also aid in the continued preparation of curriculum to help students gain relevant skills for careers in key industries such as health care, green infrastructure, clean energy and utilities, education, transportation and public service. This amount brings the total investment by IBM to close to $12 million.
Throughout the past year, IBM and Telfer have successfully advanced the Centre’s mandate as follows:
- Over 100 students have participated in courses on business analytics and performance management using software supplied by IBM
- The Telfer School of Management has collaborated with the University of South Australia in Adelaide and Fordham University in New York to develop a two-day executive education course to teach practicing managers how to work with data and conduct appropriate analysis within their organizations. The course will be launched for students at the Telfer School in the fall of 2011.
- Beginning in May the Centre will provide a series of research seminars for other researchers and industry representatives to highlight current research efforts and provide a collaborative environment to spark ideas for future innovation.
-
The Centre has created four key areas of focused research:
- Situational Analytics: Developing a methodology for defining and delivering analytics in decision ready formats for managers across industries.
- Social Media Analytics: Examining the influence of social media by integrating external data from social media sites into relevant information managers can use to make informed business decisions.
- Healthcare Operations: Working with practitioners to conduct research that makes health care processes and resource allocation more efficient.
- Ecological and Environmental Monitoring: An emerging research group focused on ways to create/evolve “Citizen Scientists” to help monitor ecological issues such as diversity and emissions.
“Canada needs to continue to develop open, collaborative approaches to research and development that increases our competitiveness on the world stage," said Rob White, director, IBM Ottawa lab site and vice-president Business Analytics Mergers and Acquisitions, IBM. "This cross-industry collaboration uses global insight to advance innovation and ultimately help Ottawa students better compete for the new higher value, high paying jobs that demand analytics skills coupled with business management insight.”
“Our first year was really focused on setting up the research areas and laying the groundwork for new course material. We've been successful in building a very strong collaborative network between Telfer and the School of Information Technology and Engineering that has really helped to attract excellent researchers in all of the research areas. Moving forward, we plan to expand the research network to other faculties at the University of Ottawa and to other universities who have an interest in the field of analytics. The idea is to leverage brain power as much as we can from wherever we can to make a difference in our respective communities” said Dr. Greg Richards, Professor of Performance Management, Telfer School of Management.
IBM business analytics software [This link is no longer available] is used in organizations worldwide to sift through huge volumes of data from inside and outside the organization and better integrate operations and financial systems. The software helps organizations sense, respond and predict relevant market and business trends in real-time. This results in better decisions, more efficient operations and improved business performance.
Background - About the IBM Centre for Business Analytics and Performance:
The IBM Centre for Business Analytics and Performance was established in April of 2010 when IBM and the Telfer School invested more than $4.8 million in cash and in-kind time of IBM research and development, software, services, consulting and support staff.
The Telfer School of Management at the University of Ottawa offers undergraduate and graduate programs in English and French across business and health management, forging strong links with business and community leaders to improve the quality of programs and research. The Telfer School is one of only 3 business schools in Canada with all three international accreditations (AACSB, AMBA and EQUIS).
IBM has invested more than $14 billion in the last five years in organic investments as well as 25 strategic acquisitions to build its business analytics capabilities. IBM has garnered over 500 patents and dedicated more than 8000 analytics consultants with industry expertise worldwide to this area. The IBM Academic Initiative also offers no charge access to online resources to help more than 4,600 universities and community colleges worldwide cultivate competitive business and IT skills to meet the needs of new and emerging industries.

The University of Ottawa has selected Professor Allan Riding as one of the recipients of the Excellence in Education award. Driven by their passion to advance and disseminate knowledge, recipients of these awards demonstrate outstanding teaching while maintaining a solid research program.
Dr. Riding joined the University of Ottawa in 2005 as Deloitte Professor in the Management of Growth Enterprises. Professor Riding also plays an important role in the activities of The Telfer School. Since 2005, he has coached the Finance component of the case competition portion of the Jeux du Commerce; over the past five years its teams have been highly successful, having been awarded first place once, second place three times and third place once. In addition, in 2010, Dr. Riding created the Ottawa Equity Challenge for third-year students in the B.Comm. program. Students in this competition conduct a financial valuation of a company. The winner’s prize is a summer internship at Export Development Canada.

“5 Days for the Homeless”
5 Days for the Homeless is a five-day charity campaign in which university students live "homeless" on campus to raise money and awareness for a local charity.
After five successful years at the University of Alberta’s School of Business, the event spread to nineteen Canadian business schools in 2010, raising $182,989 for charities across the country. To date we have raised $521,668. This year twenty-one universities and colleges across Canada will be participating in the campaign, with more joining each day. All donations will be used to help homeless shelters and organizations in the local communities of participating schools.
Students of the Telfer School of Management at the University of Ottawa are proud to be taking part in this campaign for the first time this year. Working closely with the organizing committee of the Sprott School of Business at Carleton, who participated for the first time last year, they hope to raise over $15,000 combined for Operation Come Home; a local charity that focuses on homeless and at risk youth.
Meet the students participating in this effort:
During the five days, these students will be making personal sacrifices to make their community a better place.
You can make a donation online at www.uottawa.5days.ca or in person to the participants on campus.

Executives in Canadian firms of all sizes are clearly awakening to the tremendous opportunities in the vast and diverse Indian marketplace while appreciating that the country will soon be an economic superpower. India, of course, represents a multi-faceted opportunity for Canada: a huge export and investment market, a cost effective outsourcing destination, an investor into Canada and a partner for third country projects. The opportunities are well recognized and the current state of government to government relations has never been better. The key question that is arising is how to ensure that Canadian firms will be “ready and effective” as the competition continues to intensify.

‘Canada Meets Germany’ is an international conference with an objective to foster professional and interpersonal networks between Canada and Germany as well as to increase awareness of, and insight into, the similarities and differences between the German – Canadian professional and economic environments. Through this conference, you are provided with opportunities to collaborate transnationally, and to learn the intricacies of the business operations of a European business powerhouse.
Dear Canada Meets Germany prospective applicants,
I attended Canada Meets Germany in Munich and Berlin in 2009 (the German portion of the multi-annual conference). The conference involved attending workshops and presentations hosted by professionals from various industries. In order to gauge Canadian involvement in German industry, conference participants visited the Ontario and Quebec government offices in Germany, where we contrasted energy policies and the socio-economic situation between Germany and Canada. We then visited the BMW head office in Germany, where the VP of BMW Americas and CEO of BMW Canada spoke about BMW’s position during and after the 2008 economic crisis, the new car models being produced and BMW’s stance on energy efficient vehicles. We also visited the Bavarian chancellery and learned about the types of Bavarian exports (i.e. Puma, Adidas, Audi, BMW, Alliance Insurance, etc.). We then visited the Quebec and German Consulates, and the German Foreign Office, where we learned about German politics, economics and environment. Finally, we visited Deutsche Welle, a German television media network (linked to the BBC), and engaged in an interactive presentation on journalism in Germany while touring their studio. At night, we socialized over fantastic beer and food. In fact, in true German style, we were even served beer at lunch during a site visit at a law office in Berlin! “Prost!”
The Telfer School of Management supported my attendance at Canada Meets Germany, and will host some of this year’s Canada Meets Germany presentations in the Desmarais Building of the Telfer School of Management.
I encourage anyone who reads this note to apply for the tour. Canada Meets Germany provides an unforgettable experience that will foster a multitude of prosperous professional and personal relationships, and will broaden your perspective on Canadian and German relations.
Sincerely,
Kathryn Emmons,
Telfer School of Management MBA 2010
The application deadline is March 17, 2011

Executive MBA students pulled on their skis for charity during the weekend of December 11th and 12th, 2010 for the 10th annual ‘24 Hours of Tremblant’ competition held at Mont-Tremblant Resort in Quebec.
A team from the Telfer Executive MBA at the University of Ottawa participated for the second consecutive year in eastern North America’s biggest fundraising ski event. The team consisted of Executive MBA alumni, staff, current students and friends.
The Telfer team left more than just their tracks in the snow. The fourteen-person team raised over $7,000 in donations to help sick and underprivileged children. The proceeds will go to three foundations: the Fondation centre de cancérologie Charles-Bruneau, the Ottawa Senators Foundation and the Tremblant Foundation.
The decision to enter a team came from a school project. The students became aware of the event in 2009 after completing a project with the Ottawa Senators Foundation. The marketing project requires students to work for a not-for-profit organization with the goal of giving back to their community while gaining insight into the marketing challenges faced by these charitable organizations. Attending the ski event provided the students with the special benefit of understanding the impact an organization like the Ottawa Senators Foundation can make and how important it is to support them.
The twenty four consecutive hour race allows for one team member to be on the downhill track at a time. Skiers can transition on and off the hill at anytime and as often as they wish over the twenty-four hour period. Teams can register in one of two different categories; the performance category with the goal of the skiing the fastest lap or participation where the highest number of runs in 24 hours establishes rank.
The race began under bright skies. Team captains, including Telfer’s Francois Robert, raced to the chairlifts at noon on Saturday. The Telfer members skied for a one or two-hour period before passing the racing bib to their next teammate. The younger teammates volunteered for the long night shifts much to the relief of some of the more experienced Telfer participants.
The event wasn’t just for skiers. Entertainment was widespread throughout the Mont-Tremblant village. A crowd of spectators were ringing bells, whistles and other noisemakers from the sidelines as skiers pushed through the gates. Concerts were scheduled for Friday and Saturday night adding to excitement of the weekend. Musical talent included such artist as David Usher, Florence K, Dumas, Jonas and Les Cowboys Fringants.
Skiers had to battle the elements towards the end of the race as snow and high winds caused low visibility in the later hours of Sunday morning. The winds caused the coordinators to shut down the track at one point to ensure the safety of the skiers. The skiers outlasted the winds in the end and crossed the snow-covered finish line during the twenty-fourth hour.
About ‘24 Hours of Tremblant’:
Since its debut in 2001, thanks to the vision of Jacques Villeneuve, Barbara and Craig Pollock of Formula Charity, the 24h of skiing today, is now at its peak! More than 6.2 million dollars has been raised in past years to benefit multiple charities, all with the same goal of helping sick and underprivileged children. The 24h of skiing established a new record in 2010, raising the amount of $1,857,268 for a cumulative total of $8,137,484 since the event’s inception in 2001.

The morning of October 20, 2010 marked this year’s launch of the Alumni Breakfast Speaker Series. The Breakfast was themed "Corporate Social Responsibility: The new spectrum of opportunities" and featured guest speaker: Andreas Souvaliotis, Chief Impact Officer & General Manager, AIR MILES for Social Change
About the presentation
For the majority of corporations sustainability is still just a matter of compliance – simply keeping up with regulations, consumer expectations and media scrutiny. To a growing minority, however, it’s becoming an issue of strategic leadership - adjusting business models to the coming realities of a low-carbon economy. And then, there are those few who have adopted a truly transformative approach that actually influences and inspires a meaningful shift well beyond their own corporate boundaries.
Start the day by hearing about a unique Canadian example of truly transformative environmental leadership. The Chief Impact Officer of LoyaltyOne, the company that “makes” AIR MILES, will explain how reach, trust, engagement and authenticity, mixed in with a good deal of corporate courage, can deliver a sustainability program that inspires broad changes both within and outside the organization. He’ll share how LoyaltyOne now collaborates with government agencies across our entire country while also building its own brand and bottom line. And he’ll explain the critical role of employees – as brand ambassadors – in promoting a corporation’s social responsibility values.

CO-OP Program Testimonial
As soon as I arrived at the University of Ottawa, I decided to enrol in the CO-OP program so that I could get some work experience. After doing my first three work terms in Ottawa, I wanted something unusual and more challenging for my last term. When the CO-OP office told me that there were scholarships for students who wanted to do a work term abroad, I leapt at the chance. I found a work term in France in my field of study, marketing.
Working in Paris allowed me to learn French work methods and meet many people. It strengthened my sense of independence and resourcefulness. The experience of working abroad and having to adapt to the customs and practices of another country is very rewarding. It opens you to the world. The summer I spent in Paris was the best summer of my life! To have the full university experience as well as acquiring work experience before starting a career, I strongly recommend that all students consider joining the CO-OP program and doing a work term in another country.

"Another Successful Business Trip to New York City"
This past summer, a group of 40 students from Prof. Gilles LeVasseur’s International Business and Business Law classes at the Telfer School of Management traveled to New York City. This gave the students the opportunity to truly experience the excitement of a business trip in another country while gaining great insights about numerous facets of business.
In fact, they traveled by coach bus and were back in Ottawa within 35 hours! They had 18 hours to spend in the “Big Apple”. An intense schedule of activities planned throughout Manhattan required them to be quick on their feet, and test their ability to adapt to a face-paced New Yorker lifestyle.
An early morning walk gave the group the chance to see key landmarks, such as City Hall, Ground Zero, the Statue of Liberty, the Charging Bull and the Trinity Church. By then, the group were right into the middle of the morning bustle of Wall Street, where they had the chance to see the New York Stock Exchange building and head offices of many American banks. They also had tours at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, where they learned about its important role in the economic and financial systems, and the Museum of American Finance, where the first bank of the United States of America was formed.
After taking the subway and eating lunch in the central section of the island, the group had the chance to receive a special presentation about the Canadian and USA economic and trade relations from John McNab, the Deputy Consul General of the Canadian Consulate General in New York. The group next entered international territory when visiting the United Nations headquarters, where they learned about great humanitarian goals and projects. Finally, the group was welcomed at the headquarters of USA’s largest advertisement agency, JWT. A personal tour of the creative, collaborative and motivational workspace has inspired a great number of students to work for such a dynamic organization.
“Organizing such a trip was such a great and exciting experience! Not only do I now understand how to best deal with another country, but it has opened my eyes to new opportunities.” says Danielle Perreault. In fact, much of the logistics of the trip were organized by students.
Students also had the chance to explore the city as tourists for the remainder of the evening. Some watched a Mets baseball game, others crossed the Brooklyn bridge, and most took advantage of the many shopping attractions of Times Square. The trip was overall a huge success! Such a trip is a great avenue for preparing students to assume leadership positions in today’s global economy.
A trip to Boston is to be planned for the 2010 Fall semester. It is an opportunity every student should take advantage of!

Christian Navarre joined the Telfer School of Management in 1984. He helped develop a number of international comparative studies in project management methods and participated in the design and development of organizational projects for many companies.
He also played a role in the creation of the Montréal Club, which brings together project management practitioners for “action-reflection” on organizational project design and execution. For the last 15 years, the Club has been a meeting point for project directors of large organizations, including Renault SA, Cap Gemini, Eiffage, Laboratoires LIPHA-MERK, 3M, Siemens Automotive, Plastic Omnium and Airbus.
Christian Navarre taught at Lille’s Université des sciences et techniques (I.A.E.) before coming to the University of Ottawa. He also participated in leadership programs for textile SMIs in northern France, helped set up a program to ease the establishment of industrial companies, provided consultancy services and led recovery-plan development activities for failing businesses. In addition, he worked on the creation of a D.E.S.S. His vast expertise on the auto sector made him a media favourite when it came to talking about the evolution of the industry.
The entire University community is united in offering its sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Christian Navarre, in particular his wife Armelle and his four children.
The funeral service for Professor Christian Navarre was held on Saturday, August 28, 2010 at the Racine Robert & Gauthier Funeral Home.

In the past two months, the Selection Committee for the next Dean of the Telfer School set itself the goal of completing the selection process as rapidly as possible, with the intention of filling this vital position by July 1, 2010. Great efforts were made to achieve this goal in a very short time-frame. Many applications were reviewed and a number of candidates were invited to a first round of interviews in May.
However, the Committee came to the conclusion that the search period was too short, and that it would be impossible and inappropriate to attempt to hasten the stages of the full selection and appointment process at this time of year solely to meet the July 1 deadline; it would be better to complete the process in the fall. This will allow the Committee not only to complete its search, but also to hold meetings of the faculty at which short-listed candidates can make a presentation and formally answer questions at a time of year when there is likely to be greater participation at such meetings than at present.
Consequently, Professor François Julien will be appointed Acting Dean of the Telfer School of Management as of July 1, 2010. François has carried out the duties and responsibilities of Associate Dean, Programs, and Vice-Dean of the School with distinction for over five years, and the Selection Committee has identified him as one of the short-listed candidates for the position of Dean. He will be able to guide the School through the short transition period that will allow the Committee to complete its work and all stages of the selection and appointment process in due form during the fall term.

Five students from the Telfer MBA program decided to take up the challenge and prepared an official response as part of a directed reading course. Under the direction of Prof. André Potworowski, they worked hard to examine the strategy and provided an analysis from a management best practice perspective.
Based on the classical definition of strategic planning, they asked “whether the document and its appendix are likely to deliver the stated objectives as outlined in the ministerial cover letter, whether the resources to achieve these are properly identified, and finally whether there are appropriate indicators and metrics to track progress.”
The students gave the federal strategy passing marks: great goals and objectives, but unclear linkages to implementation. They also found that the efforts to develop better tracking metrics and indicators were probably insufficient. Metrics and indicators are crucial to tracking the progress of any strategy. As Gabriela Golumbovici, one of the students, said, “I think the government is aware of its current weaknesses, and they are trying to make changes. It takes time, that’s understandable, but what we're looking for is greater transparency, accuracy and comparability.”
The student response, sent on July 12 to Environment Canada, will probably be one of a hundred or so submitted by various individuals, NGOs and other associations across Canada. An official from Environment Canada said that the different responses will be collated and posted in the next few weeks.

The last few years have certainly been tumultuous for the automobile sector. The industry is at a turning point in its history and the future seems as varied as it does complex.
Christian Navarre is a professor at the Telfer School of Management. His vast expertise on the auto sector makes him a media favourite when it comes to talking about the evolution of the industry. As part of a book he is working on, he hopes to help car builders, decision makers and consumers consider various future scenarios.
"My research centres around three questions," he notes. "How will the industry evolve and survive? What will replace the combustible motor? And what will be the impact of the computerization of cars on transportation?"
In fact, there are many factors that could transform the face of the industry and stimulate innovation over the next few years. These factors include the growing influence of India or China in the auto sector, gas prices, environmental concerns and technological advances to name only a few.
"Today's automobile is a combination of computers on the move. Imagine, for example, a vehicle that could be driven with a joystick or from a distance... or cars that could communicate with other vehicles on highways to control speed and avoid bottle necks. The possibilities are endless," suggests Prof. Navarre.

Associate Professor Sylvain Durocher’s research project entitled “Accounting Standards for Private Enterprises: An Adoption Behavior Study” was funded by CGA-Canada and the Canadian Academic Accounting Association Research Grant Program. Professor Anne Fortin from the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) is co-investigator on this project.
The Canadian Accounting Standards Board (AcSB) announced that all Publicly Accountable Enterprises will replace the use of the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) by the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), starting January 2011. Since 2009, the enterprises are allowed to adopt the new accounting standards. The objective of the research project is to examine the adoption behaviour of a sample of Canadian private enterprises to identify the factors explaining the timing of the adoption of IFRS (2009, 2010 or 2011), and the policy choices made under the preferred framework.

The first holder of the Chair will be appointed in the upcoming months and will tap into his or her expertise and interests in business history to help design and deliver a new curriculum through which students can add a historical context to their exploration of business and, in the process, better understand the world they will face as business leaders.
The Chair will also develop a research program in Canadian business history as it applies to management in the private, public and non-profit sectors, thus contributing to the progress of management expertise and leadership in Canada. Using a collaborative approach with other teachers, thinkers and researchers, the Chair aims to broaden the body of knowledge in management science by shedding light on the many facets of business history, including insights into family businesses, models of governance, financial systems, corporate structures, and the social, political and economic factors that shape our country.
“This gift will allow the Telfer School of Management to add a unique dimension of business history to its teaching and research capacity, thereby correcting an omission in most management education programs in Canada, and offering students a solid grasp of history to inform decisions that lead to success,” says Micheál J. Kelly, outgoing dean at the Telfer School of Management.
Edgar Thivierge was born in Clarence Creek in 1901 and studied at the University of Ottawa between 1915 and 1920. After becoming a priest in 1926, Father Thivierge taught at the University of Ottawa from 1927 to 1966.
The Telfer School of Management is one of only three business schools in Canada, and one of only 40 worldwide, with the “triple-crown” of international accreditations (AACSB, AMBA and
EQUIS).
