The Managing Performance & Using Data Analytics to Manage Results in Healthcare Microcredential integrates two essential competencies in modern healthcare management: performance improvement and data analytics. Learners will explore how to measure, analyze, and enhance healthcare performance by combining quality improvement frameworks with data-driven decision-making techniques. The course emphasizes practical applications through real-world case studies, helping participants develop the ability to translate data insights into performance outcomes.

By the end of the microcredential, learners will be able to design and evaluate performance improvement initiatives, interpret healthcare data, and apply analytics to optimize organizational results and patient outcomes.

Who Should Attend?

This program is designed for individual contributors working in healthcare (including but not limited to administrators, allied health professionals, and personal support workers) aspiring to roles as unit managers, team leaders, or other leadership positions. The content of the program is applicable to individuals from all healthcare settings: hospitals, retirement homes, family medicine clinics, outpatient clinics, community health centres, and allied health facilities.

Program Structure

Section 01: Managing Performance in Healthcare

This section focuses on the principles and practices of quality improvement, patient safety, and performance management in healthcare organizations. Learners will explore frameworks, methods, and tools used to assess and improve healthcare delivery systems.

Modules Covered:

  • Module 1 - Introduction to Quality, Patient Safety, and Performance: Overview of quality improvement concepts, performance frameworks, and the role of patient safety in healthcare excellence.
  • Module 2 - Quality Improvement: Examination of widely used quality improvement methodologies, including Lean, Six Sigma, and the Model for Improvement, with practical applications.
  • Module 3 - Performance Measurement: Exploration of performance indicators, data collection methods, and measurement strategies for evaluating healthcare outcomes.
  • Module 4 - Case Study – Implementation of the Epic System at a Hospital in Ontario: Analysis of a real-world case study illustrating the challenges and strategies involved in implementing a large-scale performance improvement initiative in healthcare.

Section 02: Using Data Analytics to Manage Results in Healthcare

This section introduces learners to the fundamentals of healthcare data analytics and how to apply analytical tools to monitor and enhance organizational performance. Participants will learn to collect, display, summarize, and model data to generate actionable insights.

  • Module 1 - Data Analytics in Healthcare: Introduction to healthcare data analytics, including data sources, management, and applications for improving decision-making.
  • Module 2 - Descriptive Analytics – Displaying Data: Methods for visualizing categorical and numerical healthcare data to uncover trends and insights.
  • Module 3 - Descriptive Analytics – Summarizing Data: Techniques for summarizing data distributions using measures of center, variability, and graphical tools such as box plots.
  • Module 4 - Modelling Numerical Variables: Introduction to correlation and regression analysis for exploring relationships between healthcare variables.
  • Module 5 - Case Study – Analyzing Patient Flow Data to Enhance Emergency Department Operations and Performance: Application of data analytics techniques to a real-world healthcare scenario, demonstrating how data can drive performance improvements and operational efficiency.
