The Managing Innovation and Change in Healthcare Microcredential explores how healthcare organizations can effectively manage innovation, lead change, and execute strategic projects that improve patient care, operational efficiency, and organizational resilience. Learners will gain a deep understanding of human behavior in organizations, change management theories, and project planning principles tailored to the healthcare environment.

Through real-world case studies and practical exercises, participants will develop the ability to lead teams, manage organizational transformation, and implement projects that drive meaningful change in complex healthcare systems.

Who Should Attend?

This program is designed for individual contributors working in healthcare (including but not limited to administrators, allied health professionals, and personal support workers) aspiring to roles as unit managers, team leaders, or other leadership positions. The content of the program is applicable to individuals from all healthcare settings: hospitals, retirement homes, family medicine clinics, outpatient clinics, community health centres, and allied health facilities.  

Program Structure

Section 01: Managing Innovation and Change in Healthcare

This section examines the human and organizational dimensions of change, providing learners with the foundational knowledge to manage innovation and transformation in healthcare settings. The focus is on understanding organizational behavior, motivation, team dynamics, and leadership in times of change.

Modules Covered:

  • Module 1 - Overview of Organizational Behaviour: Introduction to key concepts in organizational behavior and their relevance to managing innovation and change in healthcare environments.
  • Module 2 - Understanding Motivation and Organizational Culture: Exploration of how motivation and culture shape employee engagement, performance, and adaptability during organizational transitions.
  • Module 3 - Understanding Group Dynamics and Teamwork to Create High Performing Teams: Examination of group dynamics, communication, and collaboration strategies for building cohesive, high-performing healthcare teams.
  • Module 4 - Change Theories and Leading through Change: Study of major change management models and leadership approaches that facilitate successful transformation in healthcare organizations.
  • Module 5 - Case Study – National Research Corporation Patient Experience Data Collection: Application of organizational behavior and change management principles to a real-world case involving patient experience data collection and improvement initiatives.

Section 02: Project Planning and Management in Healthcare

This section provides learners with practical tools and frameworks to plan, implement, and evaluate healthcare projects. It covers project management standards, planning and budgeting techniques, risk management, and the role of leadership in ensuring project success.

Modules Covered:

  • Module 1 - Introduction to Project Planning and Management in Healthcare: Overview of project management principles, emphasizing their application in healthcare environments.
  • Module 2 - Project Management Standards and Project Initiation: Examination of professional project management frameworks (such as PMBOK and Agile) and how to define project objectives, stakeholders, and deliverables.
  • Module 3 - Planning, Scope of Work, and Role Responsibility: Development of project scopes, work breakdown structures, and clear role definitions to ensure accountability and alignment.
  • Module 4 - Project Scheduling and Budgeting: Techniques for developing realistic project schedules, allocating resources, and managing budgets effectively.
  • Module 5 - Risk Management and the Role of the Executive: Identification and mitigation of project risks, with a focus on executive oversight and governance in healthcare projects.
  • Module 6 - Closing Out the Project and Wrap-Up: Exploration of project evaluation, lessons learned, and best practices for ensuring sustainability and continuous improvement post-implementation.
