12 hours. 120 teams. 1 disease.
On June 17, CASCO and JDC played their part in celebrating cancer survivors, remembering loved ones lost to cancer, and fighting back in hopes to find a cure to a terrible disease. Representing the Telfer School of Management, CASCO and JDC took part in the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life Orleans edition. From 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. the students walked, jogged, and ran the night away raising money to combat cancer, giving hope to a more promising future for those diagnosed with the disease.
The night possessed a full docket of entertainment including music, dancers, singers, and a band. With food tents set up and even free massages given on site, there was plenty to keep everyone busy. At dusk when all the luminaries were lit, a remembrance ceremony was held for all those who lost their battles with cancer. With the night sky lit by candle light and moon light, two cancer survivors recounted their battle with the deadly disease and both ended with a very simple yet powerful message – Always live your life to its fullest because you never know when you won’t have that opportunity again.
Relay for Life was a huge success. Both CASCO and JDC contributed immensely and had a load of fun in the process. The Orleans event raised 299,000 dollars and all of Ottawa raised nearly 1 million dollars in the fight against cancer. I think it’s safe to say that Relay for Life will be an event both associations will take part in again next year!
