Moral Work, Identity and Managerial Complexity

Francis Desjardins, PhD
Assistant Professor Francis Desjardins studies the qualitative dimensions of managerial complexity, focusing on how emerging technologies, moral considerations, and professional identity tensions shape organizational and community life. His research spans contexts such as lifestyle entrepreneurship (e.g., craft beer ventures where personal and business identities fuse), professional identity shifts (e.g., police officers transitioning into management roles), moral dilemmas (e.g., the tough trade-offs faced by executives), and moral narratives in urban change (e.g., residents/promoters justifying their role in gentrification). Among other things, he examines how actors engage in moral work when navigating difficult decisions, and how identities and moral narratives influence both organizational practice and community dynamics.
