Digital Enterprise Centre (DEC)

About the Digital Enterprise Centre (DEC)

The Digital Enterprise Centre (DEC) at the Telfer School of Management is a hub for research and innovation in digital transformation. Originally established as the Centre for Business Analytics and Performance, the DEC leverages over a decade of research in digital integration to help organizations harness the power of data, analytics and foresight methodologies.

In collaboration with the global network of Intelligence Centres of Excellence (ICoE), we bring together academic and industry expertise to advance strategic decision-making, optimize organizational performance and inform policy development. Professor Jonathan Calof, leader of the Ontario Indigenous Centre of Excellence, works alongside researchers and practitioners to explore the relationship between digital transformation and anticipatory governance.

Located at Hub350 on the University of Ottawa’s Kanata North campus, our centre fosters an environment of collaboration and innovation. Our location allows us to strengthen partnerships with industry leaders and expand our research capabilities, ensuring we remain at the forefront of digital enterprise research.

Students

Our centre has fostered a dynamic research environment by collaborating with a cohort of students from various academic backgrounds and levels of study. These students bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the centre, with research spanning topics from interpretable newsvendor models using tree-based methods to deep reinforcement learning frameworks for portfolio management.

Our students, including Master of Science in Management (MSc) and PhD candidates, bring diverse perspectives and expertise, enriching our research efforts and helping address complex challenges in digital transformation and anticipatory systems. Students also contribute to DEC-funded projects or research projects through external organizations.

In addition, the Canadian government offers co-op and internship opportunities through the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP), providing students with hands-on experience and pathways into the workforce.

Research groups and workshops

We host a variety of research groups, led by industry leaders and professors. These groups work on distinct agendas and research goals in both business-specific areas and those of more general interest.

Our workshops provide hands-on opportunities for learning and applying new research techniques. They help researchers stay on the cutting edge and bring practical insights to their work.

DEC is a collaborative platform where innovation thrives. We bring together academic research, industry expertise and cutting-edge methodologies to drive collaborative exploration and advancement in business analytics and performance.

Research highlights

  • Professors Greg Richards and Umar Ruhi collaborated with a large consumer packaged goods company to develop a predictive model for sales based on the introduction of sales discounts.
  • Through a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) grant, Professor Richards and a team of student researchers worked with a government organization to develop a model for integrating internal and external data in an analytics environment to provide specialized data for decision making.

Researchers

Under Professor Richards’ leadership, we’re expanding our team of researchers, to drive innovation and excellence. To learn more about our research initiatives or explore collaboration opportunities, contact us.
