The University of Ottawa has selected Professor Allan Riding as one of the recipients of the Excellence in Education award. Driven by their passion to advance and disseminate knowledge, recipients of these awards demonstrate outstanding teaching while maintaining a solid research program.
Dr. Riding joined the University of Ottawa in 2005 as Deloitte Professor in the Management of Growth Enterprises. As a senior faculty member, he was asked at that time to help stimulate research and to act as a mentor to several new faculty members. While his own research has continued to be prolific (two chapters in edited books, 12 research papers in scholarly journals, six of which were in top-tier journals, 16 papers in the refereed proceedings of scholarly conferences, and he currently holds an SSHRC grant--all since joining Telfer) he is an especially effective teacher, mentor and graduate student supervisor.
Professor Riding also plays an important role in the activities of The Telfer School. Since 2005, he has coached the Finance component of the case competition portion of the Jeux du Commerce; over the past five years its teams have been highly successful, having been awarded first place once, second place three times and third place once. In addition, in 2010, Dr. Riding created the Ottawa Equity Challenge for third-year students in the B.Comm. program. Students in this competition conduct a financial valuation of a company. The winner’s prize is a summer internship at Export Development Canada.
