Leadership roles today come with more responsibility, visibility and mental load than ever before. Organizations are placing increasing emphasis on work performance and individual resilience. But far less attention has been paid to what leadership roles ask of people emotionally and mentally. This talk draws on decades spent researching and working with leaders and organizations. It examines how organizational design shapes leaders’ well-being, decision-making and ability to lead well.
Professor Barling describes leader (and employee) distress not as a personal weakness but as an occupational reality created by modern work. The talk offers a holistic perspective on how evidence-based leadership and psychologically informed supports can help organizations become places where people can thrive and performance can soar.
