PhD Workshop - Non-academic career options for PhD graduates

On November 27, 2020, 10:00 to 11:30 a.m., we are organizing a virtual session on non-academic careers for Ph.D. students. The session is entitled “Non-academic career options for PhD graduates”.  MSc students are welcome to attend.

Join us to hear about work experience in different industries/organizations, and how to transition from PhD training to a non-academic career.  We will have several speakers from different organizations. The presentations will be followed by a Q+A period.

Speakers:

Greg Richards - Director, Executive MBA and Interim Vice-Dean (Undergraduate and Professional Programs), Adjunct Professor, Telfer - Professor Richards conducts research into organizational performance management, Business Intelligence and Business Analytic practices and outcomes in public and private sector organizations. He leads the Centre for Business Analytics and Performance that explores emerging technical and social issues related to analytics, Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence. He also coordinates the BDO/Interis Public Sector Performance Management research cluster that examines performance strategies unique to public management.  Professor Richards has taught Strategy, Organizational Behaviour, Human Resource Management, Organization Design and Change Management. He currently teaches courses on Corporate Performance Management and Business Intelligence/Business Analytics in the MBA and EMBA programs. In addition, he teaches the Management Consulting course and coordinates the MBA Consulting project. Prior to his academic appointment, Professor Richards worked at Transport Canada and at Consulting and Audit Canada as well as with Cognos Incorporated. He also has over 20 years of consulting experience and is a Certified Management Consultant, a Fellow of the CMC-Ontario Institute of Management Consultants, and an Academic Fellow of the International Council of Management Consulting Institutes.

Renee Legare - Executive Vice-President & Chief Human Resources Officer, The Ottawa Hospital - Renée Légaré is currently the Executive Vice-President & Chief Human Resources Officer at The Ottawa Hospital (TOH), which is one of the largest Academic Health Sciences Centres in the country.

Renée has worked at The Ottawa Hospital for the past 8 years, where she is recognized for her strong leadership skills, her passion for people, her energetic approach, and her desire to make a difference. She brings to the organization over 25 years of extensive experience in human resources, which includes change management, performance management and measurement, wellness and engagement, talent management and development, employee and labour relations as well as extensive coaching and mentoring. Renée is highly respected by her fellow leaders and staff and is known for her excellent ability to listen and to mentor individuals. Renée earned her Master’s in Industrial Relations from Université du Québec en Outaouais and an Honours degree in Economics from Université de Sherbrooke. To enhance her leadership abilities, she completed her Director’s Education Program with the Institute of Corporate Directors. She also recently successfully completed her PhD in Industrial Relations. Renée is always looking for ways to improve our healthcare system, by taking on new initiatives and projects to continue to provide the best experience for our people and world-class care for our patients.

Anika Sisto - Strategic Analyst and Advisor, Department of National Defence - Anika Sisto recently completed her Ph.D. in Business Administration (Strategy) at Concordia University's John Molson School of Business. There, she was a recipient of the Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarship in 2015 and recognized as Valedictorian for her graduating class in 2020. She has presented her research findings at multiple international conferences and published articles in several peer-reviewed journals such as the International Business Review. During her Masters and Doctoral programs, she had the opportunity to work in academia as a research assistant and a part-time professor, and in the private sector as Director of Marketing for a Wesley Clover startup. Since graduating, she has begun her career in public service and works as a strategic analyst and advisor for the Department of National Defence. 

Elnaz Kanani - Manager in Omnia – Artificial Intelligence practice, Deloitte - Elnaz is a Manager in Omnia – Artificial Intelligence practice at Deloitte. She is a Project Management Professional and holds a PhD in Management Sciences, Quantitative Methods, from University of Montreal for which she was the recipient of the best doctoral thesis of 2015. As a business acumen, she has worked with numerous public, crown, and private sector clients to deliver technology-based business solutions with the focus on data analytics and artificial intelligence. Her engagements have spanned across the entire data and technology lifecycle, from ideation to implementation. She has also 5 years of experience in business analysis during which she applied different statistical and mathematical modelling techniques to business problems in finance and econometrics, energy systems and environment. She has a demonstrated record of performance in data analysis, research and development (R&D), and university-level teaching.

Elnaz has published and presented over 10 journal/conference papers proposing novel methodologies in the topics of optimization, data/decision analysis, game theory, and dynamic programming.

Michael Borish - Senior Analyst, Export Development Canada - Michael Borish has 35 years of experience in international development and finance. He has an MBA from the University of Chicago (1985) and a PhD in Management from Carleton University (2020). His work experience includes commercial banking, development banking, and private consulting. He has worked in more than 60 countries, and is currently is a Senior Analyst with Export Development Canada.  He has managed several research projects for EDC carried out between Telfer and EDC.
