Yes. Language proficiency requirements apply if your first language is neither English nor French and you haven’t completed sufficient previous education in the language of instruction you’re applying to study in.
You must provide proof of language proficiency if:
- Your first language isn’t English (for English-language BCom)
and - You haven’t completed at least three years of full-time studies in English at a recognized institution (secondary or postsecondary level).
The same applies to French if you’re applying for the French-language BCom or the French Immersion Stream.

Test results must be recent (within two years of your application date) and sent directly from the testing organization.
French proficiency (for French BCom or French immersion)
If you’re applying for the French-language program and haven’t completed studies in French, you may be asked to take a French proficiency test, such as the Test de connaissance du français (TCF) or a uOttawa French language test.
Exemptions
You might be exempt from testing if:
- You’ve completed three or more years of full-time education in the language of instruction (English or French).
- You’re from a country or region where English or French is the primary language of instruction.
