Garrick Apollon has 15 years’ experience as a corporate lawyer with expertise in professional development for legal and business professionals. During that time, Garrick has also taught thousands of university business and law students at the University of Ottawa, and trained thousands of legal and business professionals across Canada and internationally. In addition, Garrick has researched and developed numerous accredited professional development programs for legal and business professionals, while developing new courses for law and MBA students.

Garrick was called to Bar of Ontario in 2004 and holds a degree in civil law (LLL) from Université Laval and a Juris Doctor (JD) from the University of Ottawa. He has completed graduate studies in law, holding both a Master of Law in International Business Law (LLM) from Université Laval and a Master of Comparative Law (LLCM) from the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School (Penn Law, U.S.).

Garrick strongly believes in the promotion of social justice and in lawyers’ obligation to lead by example by providing pro bono legal services. In 2010, he received the Humanitarian Excellence Award at the Department of Justice for his pro bono work in Haiti. In 2012, he received the Exemplary Public Service Award at Penn Law for completing the most pro bono hours of all graduate students. In 2014, he received the Hope, Empowerment and Success Award from the University of Ottawa’s Black Students Association.

Garrick played college football for the Rouge & Or at Université Laval. In 1999, he was a member of the Rouge & Or when it won its first of a record 10 Vanier Cups, awarded to Canadian university football’s national champions. The Laval Rouge & Or is one of the most successful teams in Canadian college football history.

Hal has over 23 years’ professional experience, with the last 19 years devoted to operations management.  His professional experience is complemented by solid proven leadership and people management skills.  Hal has worked in different industries such as sheet metal fabrication, fibre optics, contract manufacturing, telecommunication, printing and, most recently, health care.

Hal is focused on developing business systems, process re-engineering, warranty services, contract negotiations, proposal development, client management and process waste elimination, using Six Sigma and Lean principles and tools.  He is a results-driven, strategic thinker with the ability to manage long-term goals in conjunction with the immediate needs of the business. 

Hal received a BSc and an MSc in mechanical and aerospace engineering from the University of Dayton, in Ohio.  He also holds a MBA (Executive) from the Telfer School of Management.

Currently, Hal is responsible for running the operations team at Thermo Fisher Scientific — Microbiology Canada, located in the nation’s capital.  He is responsible for the entire Canadian operation of manufacturing and distributing prepared media (considered as a medical device) that allow health-care laboratories and hospitals to culture and identify micro-organisms.  The product offers solutions to diagnose infectious diseases and tests for potential bacterial contamination in food.

Hal’s responsibilities include all aspects of the business, including quality assurance, human resources, finance, planning, engineering, practical process improvement (PPI), facilities and supply chain management.  He is accountable for all areas of the site’s business operations, budget, throughput, supply chain, site P&L, site goals and objectives and alignment of the operational performance with the corporate strategy and long-term vision.  Continually influencing positive culture change throughout the organization by fostering an environment of honest and open dialogue, trust, and ownership, and is safety, quality and cost focused to deliver the best performing products at competitive pricing to the customer.

Derek Howe is a seasoned executive with over 15 years’ progressive financial, operational and negotiating experience in the engineering, real estate and construction industries.  He is recognized as a leader in the Ottawa marketplace, and has been directly responsible for the origination, execution and development of over three million square feet of real estate and construction in the office, industrial and residential sectors, representing over $1 billion of economic activity. 

Currently, Derek is the chief operating officer of Zibi Canada, slated to be one of the world’s most sustainable communities.  Situated on the Ottawa River, on the former Domtar lands, Zibi is a master planned community consisting of 3.8 million square feet of residential, commercial, retail and mixed-use real estate.  The project will eventually house some 2,000 units and be home to a vibrant urban community.

Derek received his Masters of Business of Administration in 2013 from the Richard Ivey School of Business in London, Ontario.

Professor Dana Hyde holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration and a Master's of Business Administration from the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario, and a PhD in Management from INSEAD, Fontainebleau, France — recognized recently by Business Week magazine as the world’s leading global business school — with a specialization in strategy.

Prior to joining the University of Ottawa, Professor Hyde taught at Babson College, which has the U.S.’s leading undergraduate and MBA programs in entrepreneurship, and at the Ivey School of Business, where she won a faculty teaching award both years. Several of the case studies Professor Hyde produced at INSEAD and IMD are worldwide bestsellers and have won international awards.

A full-time independent consultant in strategic and organizational change for several public and private sector organizations in the Ottawa region, with extensive work with an international government department, Professor Hyde has worked over the past 20 years as a consultant and researcher in many countries in Western Europe as well as in the U.S. She is also a visiting professor at Vlerick Management School (Ghent, Belgium and St. Petersburg, Russia).

Professor Hyde’s interests include the linkages between organizational innovation and business innovation: how organizational practices and systems can drive, facilitate or hinder business innovation; sparking and sustaining strategic and organizational change at all levels of the organization; the human processes involved in effective management consulting; strategy and the management of change in the public sector; corporate entrepreneurship for strategic renewal in medium-sized and large firms; horizontal management, including cross-business relationships among organizational units; corporate strategy in multinational multi-business firms, including the role of the corporate centre; and the integration process in mergers and acquisitions.

Sanabel is a certified change management and business transformation leader with 22 years of rich and diverse experience, including 16 years in business leadership. Her experience is unique in blending a deep understanding of issues and solutions at various levels of the business transformation, including people, organizational challenges, business processes, and IM/IT challenges and opportunities.

She is currently leading the change management practice at Nav Canada, where she oversees the change management activities for various strategic transformation initiatives as well as operational projects. Prior to that, she served eight years as a leader at Export Development Canada (EDC).  Before joining EDC, she had 16 years of management consulting experience at Deloitte and working independently.

Sanabel was a consultant for world-class organizations such as Nissan, SC Johnson, Irving Oil, the U.S. government, the Canadian government and international banks. Her assignments allowed her to work across North America, Europe and the Middle East. Working for these organizations, she developed solid experience in change management, leadership, team building and communications.

Sanabel holds an Executive MBA from Cornell University (USA), and Queen’s University (Canada). She is a Certified Change Management Professional (CCMP) in Prosci-ADKAR, and a Certified SCRUM Master. 

Cathy Lewis earned a bachelor’s from Carleton University, a education degree from the University of Ottawa and an Executive MBA from the Telfer School of Management. She has 25 years of experience working in a leadership role across the government, corporate and not-for-profit sectors. Half of her career has been as a self-employed consultant and half as an employee. Her areas of expertise include education, manufacturing and governance.

Cathy leads domestic and international education programs through her consulting practice. Most recently she was the academic lead in developing the first international payments certification credential, in collaboration with Australia, South Africa, the United States and the Netherlands, to address the global talent shortage in fintech. Education clients have included Microsoft, Nortel, NASA’s distance learning, Public Works Government Services Canada, the Library of Parliament, school boards and non-profit organizations.

Cathy began her career in technology-enabled learning with adaptive technology at the Paul Mentor Centre (Carleton University) and the Student Academic Success Service (University of Ottawa), and then as the education technology leader of the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board.

While working in biotechnology and medical device manufacturing, Cathy developed a learner-focused, first-of-its-kind workplace education program in partnership with Algonquin College and the Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities, resulting in 487 apprentices graduating in microelectronics or as instrumentation control technicians.

As a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, she led continuous improvement implementations across North America, including designing and delivering Green Belt certification training. In a manufacturing context, Cathy has been a global lead for environment, health and safety and director of communications. She has designed and implemented an enterprise strategic program office and created workplace mentoring and coaching programs.

Cathy has been a board member for 15 years. One area of expertise in her consulting practice is governance. A recent example was guiding the development of a transition path from successful startup to long-term sustainability through organizational development, stakeholder consultation, strategy implementation, leadership coaching and collaborative creation of a custom-fit governance structure.

Cathy is a passionate community member who recently volunteered on a Habitat for Humanity build team in Whitehorse, served as treasurer on the board of the Elizabeth Fry Society of Ottawa and is an active supporter of the Ottawa Network for Education’s junior achievement and school breakfast programs. Cathy founded iSisters Technology Mentoring in 2001. It creates and delivers technology programs in collaboration with community partners to equip women with the skills and confidence to participate fully in their community. She supports strategy, programs and partnership development as a board member.
