Through extensive and rigorous training in a variety of analytical techniques and in-depth coverage of cutting-edge, practice-oriented research, you will gain the expertise needed to excel in numerous business positions. If your objective is to work in the field of accounting in positions such as Financial Manager, Financial Advisor, Business Analyst, or Management Analyst or to pursue a PhD in Accounting in a world-renowned business school, this is the concentration for you.
Business Analytics
Acquire solid knowledge of modern analytics methodologies, ranging from statistical analysis and machine learning (artificial intelligence) to simulation and optimization, together with a holistic understanding of management theory and practice. Learn to harness analytics and data in many functional fields of management, such as operations and logistics, service, and risk management, to become a management professional with business analytics acumen. This training will prepare you for professional designation as a Certified Analytics Professional (CAP) and position you well to work in data-driven industries. You will also be well-equipped to pursue research-intensive careers and world-class, cutting-edge PhD programs.
Entrepreneurship
Develop essential entrepreneurial competencies that satisfy the increasing interest and engagement in entrepreneurial activity in Canada. These include analytical skills, the ability to assess complex materials and data, problem-solving, and the application of knowledge. This concentration promotes entrepreneurial thinking and competencies across all sizes and types of organizations which include startups, family businesses and consulting firms. Finance
Gain advanced knowledge and analytical skills to pursue a variety of financial career paths (asset management, risk management, investment banking, commercial banking, derivatives, private equity/venture capital, consultancy, financial planning, insurance), prepare for financial designations, such as the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), or pursue a PhD in Finance in a world-renowned business school.
Innovation Management
Discover the importance of innovation practices in business, social enterprise, and policymaking. This concentration fosters the development of five innovation management competencies linked to high performance across various settings, including finding opportunities, commercializing opportunities, managing diverse teams for innovation, leveraging innovation ecosystems, and leadership for innovation. Pursue careers either as a leader within the increasingly innovation-driven economy or follow an academic career path by pursuing a PhD in a top business school.
Marketing and Behavioural Science
Apply research to understand how behaviour affects people’s green consumption (e.g., recycling and reusing), health (e.g., choosing food, exercise), happiness (e.g., spending time versus spending money) and wealth (e.g., shopping, saving, investing, donating). This concentration focuses on understanding, predicting and changing people’s behaviour. Gain the knowledge and technical skills you need to design, implement, analyze and interpret the outcomes of behaviour-changing interventions. Develop practical skills in methodologies such as experimental design and analysis, and in sophisticated statistical approaches such as predictive analytics. These skills will prepare you for behavioural research and management positions in many private and public organizations.
Organizational Behaviour and Human Resources (OBHR)
Acquire the advanced research and analytical skills expected of HR professionals holding more senior professional designations, such as the Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL) and Certified Human Resources Executive (CHRE) designations in Ontario. Become uniquely positioned to pursue an HR career in which you develop value-added practices in staffing, training and development, and/or employee relations using the latest research on practices that support employee health and well-being. Frequently Asked Questions
A master’s in management typically provides general knowledge and skills to be a more effective manager. It is meant for people who have not completed an undergraduate degree in management or business administration. In contrast, the MSc MGT provides advanced applied research skills to help organizations solve complex problems. The MSc in MGT is suitable for people with many educational backgrounds, including one in management or business administration.
It is best to apply to only one Telfer program. Otherwise, you risk giving the impression that you do not know what you want to do. If you are not sure which program to apply for, we encourage you to speak to one of our recruiters who will be able to guide you in your decision.
If you completed (or are on your way to completing) your BCom degree at the Telfer School of Management and have a CGPA equal to or above 8.0 at the time of your application, you are not required to write the GMAT or the GRE.
Similarly, if you completed your undergraduate degree in another faculty at the University of Ottawa or at another Canadian university with a CGPA equal to or above 8.5 at the time of your application, you are not required to write the GMAT or the GRE.
If you do not meet the criteria stated above, you must take the GMAT or GRE test.
Graduate management admission tests are the most used and reliable indicator of academic success in graduate business degree programs. As a triple-crown accredited school, we must ensure that our applicants get a competitive score on the GMAT or GRE to be accepted into the program.
Yes! However, if you are an international student, you must assume that your co-op work placements will not be in the government sector in Ottawa. The federal government is the largest employer in Ottawa and requires students to have security clearances. This requirement is difficult for international students to obtain on time. As an international student, you can apply to co-op placements in private companies in Ottawa and in other cities such as Toronto or Montreal.
No. Although you can complete your research project under the supervision of a professor if the opportunity presents itself, you can also choose to complete one of the predetermined research projects supervised by your concentration’s research project coordinator.
