Ian Telfer: legacy, generosity, a lasting Impact on Telfer School of Management

Discover the story behind the name. In this special video, Ian Telfer, Former Chairman, President, and CEO of GoldCorp Inc. and proud University of Ottawa alumni, reflects on his deep connection with the University of Ottawa. Filmed during Homecoming 2024, Ian shares his thoughts on leadership, legacy, and the power of giving back to the next generation. Born in the UK and raised in Canada, Ian Telfer's journey to success was anything but linear. Facing early academic challenges and uncertain career prospects, he discovered his passion for business in early adulthood, which eventually led him to pursue an MBA at the University of Ottawa. From those modest beginnings, he forged an extraordinary career in the mining industry, marked by bold decisions, resilience, and a drive to redefine what is possible. His story is a powerful example of how determination, education, and second chances can shape a remarkable legacy. In 2007, Ian made history by giving the largest donation made to a Canadian business school at the time—an act of generosity that led to the naming of the Telfer School of Management. He also established an annual scholarship to provide financial assistance to MBA and MHA students in need. 📌 Thank you for taking the time to watch this video.
