Telfer Emerging Researcher Award 2023 - Madeline Toubiana

The Telfer School of Management is pleased to announce that Professor Madeline Toubiana is the recipient of the 2023 Emerging Researcher Award. The award recognizes research excellence among professors in the early stages of their careers.

Toubiana’s research focuses on social change, innovation and the role of emotions, entrepreneurship, institutional processes and stigmatization. She explores how marginalized individuals can be included in change processes, studying various settings, such as social enterprises, the prison system and the sex trade.

Since joining Telfer in 2022, Toubiana has made outstanding contributions to the school by securing research funding and publishing high-impact papers that have advanced our understanding of critical social issues.

This includes numerous articles in highly regarded FT50 journals, including Administrative Science Quarterly, the Academy of Management Journal, the Academy of Management Review, the Journal of Management Studies and Organization Studies. Such achievements at an early stage of her career are rare. 

Additionally, Toubiana has authored chapters in highly-regarded books and co-authored a book published by Cambridge University Press.

Toubiana’s contributions extend beyond the theoretical; her research has real-life implications for policy and practice. This is evident in her recognition as one of the University of Bath’s top 30 female scholars in responsible business, highlighting the influence of her work on various aspects of the business world.

Unsurprisingly, Toubiana’s research has received substantial external funding. She has been awarded multiple external grants, including an SSHRC Insight grant in 2021 for her role as principal investigator.

In addition to her research, Toubiana has made a significant impact on students through student research training. She has supervised or co-supervised four doctoral students and participated in six doctoral dissertation committees, while also serving on two doctoral dissertation examination committees. This commitment to nurturing future generations of scholars highlights her dedication as a researcher.

In recognition of her outstanding contributions to research and mentorship of students, Telfer congratulates Professor Toubiana on receiving the 2023 Emerging Researcher Award.

She holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Second Language Teaching and a Bachelor of Education.
