Telfer experiential learning: Connecting classroom and real-world experience

At the Telfer School of Management, experiential learning isn’t just an educational strategy—it’s a transformative experience that empowers students to apply classroom knowledge to real-world business challenges. From consulting projects to co-op placements, case competitions and entrepreneurship initiatives, students gain hands-on experience that prepares them for careers in a rapidly-evolving business world.

Consulting projects

One key component of experiential learning at Telfer is participating in consulting projects with real businesses. This enables students to use theoretical knowledge to solve real business problems. It not only deepens their understanding of business concepts, but also enhances problem-solving, communication and analytical skills. For companies, these collaborations offer fresh perspectives and innovative solutions, creating a mutually beneficial relationship.

Telfer MBA Consult-a-Thon

The Telfer MBA Consult-a-Thon pairs MBA students with Ottawa SMEs to solve organizational problems. This also allows students to apply classroom knowledge to real business challenges, sharpening skills like strategic analysis, project management and client communication. Participants have six hours to case-crack to help local businesses and give back to the community.

The fast-paced format mimics real-world business pressures, while exposure to diverse industries broadens students’ understanding of the local business scene and expands their networks.

Case competitions

Telfer students are also encouraged to participate in case competitions, both locally and internationally. These competitions challenge them to think critically under pressure, develop strategic solutions and present their findings to industry professionals. The Jeux du Commerce, for example, is a prestigious competition that allows students to work through complex business scenarios while improving their teamwork and presentation skills. This builds students’ confidence and help them develop a broad set of essential business skills.

Co-op program

The co-operative education (co-op) program at Telfer takes experiential learning to the next level by providing students with alternating study and paid work terms. Students work with leading organizations, gaining practical experience that complements their studies. This enables them to build a robust professional network and better understand their career paths.

International exchange program

Telfer also emphasizes the importance of global exposure. Through the international exchange program, students can study at partner institutions worldwide, gaining new cultural insights and broadening their understanding of global business practices. This equips them with the cross-cultural skills increasingly essential in the globalized economy.

Research facilities

Telfer also offers students access to cutting-edge research labs that foster practical learning through real-world application. One example is the Triple I (Inclusion, Interaction and Intervention) Lab.

The lab is focused on researching social inclusion in workplaces and classrooms. Equipped with advanced technology, including AI, observational tools and physiological measurement devices, it allows researchers and students to study interpersonal dynamics and behaviour in group settings. For instance, one ongoing project investigates the role of personality in negotiation outcomes, analyzing communication tactics and emotions during negotiations.

The lab allows undergraduate research assistants to engage with data collection and cutting-edge research methodologies. Students develop transferable skills applicable to careers in both academia and industry while gaining insight into complex social interactions in organizational settings.

Mentorship

The Telfer Executive Mentorship Program pairs students with accomplished alumni based on shared career interests. This provides students with guidance and insight into their chosen industries, helping them refine their career goals and build professional networks.

Executive Mentorship Program

In the Executive Mentorship Program, students like Tom Lindale, a BCom accounting student interested in ESG (environmental, social, and governance)-focused businesses, are matched with industry leaders like Rachid Nayel, CFO at an ESG investment fund. Through regular meetings, students gain practical industry exposure, visiting workplaces, attending industry events and building networks with professionals in their field of interest.

This program not only helps students set clear career goals, but also enhances their leadership and communication skills. Alumni and corporate donations allow students to travel to meet their mentors, offering them even broader exposure to diverse business environments.
