Four years ago, an historic renewal was taking place in research at Telfer. Together with colleagues, I dedicated my energies to supporting and shaping that renewal. Over four eventful years, we invested new energies into the research enterprise, we deepened our research funding base, and we prepared the ground to welcome our first PhD in Management cohort in September 2016. The increased focus on fostering academic and external partnerships has also been a particular achievement from 2011-2015. I was also very pleased with the progress we made on strategic hiring of new professors, development of research based graduate programs, and targeted funding to support new research initiatives and young researchers.

But the most important achievement of the last few years has been to develop our Strategic Areas of Excellence (SAEs) around the fields of Business Analytics and Performance, Health Systems Management and Entrepreneurship and Innovation. Starting out as small research communities of interest, the SAEs grew to achieve a level of impact that now extends beyond academic output, as a transformative force shaping research culture at the School. Our success today confirms the strategic decision taken to focus on these selected areas of academic excellence. At the same time, proactive researchers are making their marks nationally and internationally in more traditional management disciplines, namely finance, accounting and organisational behaviour and human resources management.

Over the course of my mandate, I have had the unique privilege of helping to complete a pivotal transformation at the Telfer School, and I look back on what was accomplished with a tremendous sense of pride. As I pass the torch to Wojtek Michalowski, a leading researcher in our faculty, I am confident that we will continue to advance the research enterprise in our faculty.
