Financial literacy has a positive impact on the welfare of business owners, of their employees, and on the positive and negative economic prosperity effects of firm growth and failure; however, research has not considered the state of financial knowledge among business owners or what forms of remediation might be needed if Canadians are to thrive. Professors Allan Riding, Barbara Orser, and Miwako Nitani from the Telfer School of Management (University of Ottawa) have received an Insight Grant by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada to address this knowledge gap. In an article recently published in the prestigious journal Accounting, Organization, and Society, Professor Darlene Himick at Telfer School of Management and Marion Bivot (Université Laval) studied the shift from traditional accounting practices to the market-based approach to measure the value of pension plan liabilities in the United States. Himick and Bivot suggest that in the debate over judgment versus objectivity, it is not about who is getting the accounting right, but rather about who is telling policymakers the most compelling story.
