X-ALT-DESC;FMTTYPE=text/html:_***M.SC. STUDENTS\, THESE SEMINARS CAN COUNT TOWARDS THE SIX MANDATORY\nTELFER RESEARCH SEMINARS SERIES\n[https://telfer.uottawa.ca/en/research/events/] REQUIRED FOR YOUR\nPROGRAM (MGT 6191/ MGT 6991 / MHS 6991) (4 SEMINARS FOR MSC\nPROJECT-BASED STUDENTS).***_\n\nSAM MAGLIO\, PHD\n\nResearch in marketing\, psychology\, and behavioral economics has long\nexamined what people consume\, when people consume\, and why people\nconsume. But what about how long people consume? For things that\naren’t swallowed or savored in an instant\, there exists a clear\nduration of time over which people acquire a continued stream of\nutility from a product. As the owners of it\, they get to decide how\nlong that consumption period lasts. This research asks what goes into\nthat decision. A series of longitudinal studies and supplemental\nexperiments—across a variety of duration measures and\nproducts—offers three answers. First\, while incentives like nudges\nand norms increase choosing\, they subsequently reduce consuming.\nSecond\, certain personality traits make people more prone to keep or\ndiscard their belongings. Third\, the decision strategy that people\nbring to making a choice colors how they treat the things they select\,\nboth now and later.\n\nABOUT THE SPEAKER[SAM MAGLIO]\n\nSAM MAGLIO is a consumer psychologist at the University of Toronto. He\nconducts research at the intersection of cognition\, motivation\, and\naffect\, with an emphasis on implications for consumer behaviour and\nwellbeing. He studies how thinking about time\, using language\, and\nexperiencing emotion impact consumer judgments and decisions.
