Research on institutional translation explains\nhow ideas can be edited to move from one context to another but\nfocuses primarily on dyadic sender – receiver translation. We draw\nfrom recent works on ecologies of translation that explore\nmultidirectional translations involving multiple actors. While this\nresearch considers translation ecosystems as emergent\, we ask how an\norganization working across multiple contexts can create and manage\nsuch an ecosystem. Through a longitudinal study of Desjardins\nInternational Development (DID)\, a development organization promoting\nfinancial inclusion operating in 65 countries over 55 years\, we\nidentity a catalyzing model based on managing the tension between\ncontextualizing and transferability in the translation ecosystem. DID\ncatalyzed a continuously expanding ecosystem of translation by\nfostering _contextualized experimenting_ and _cross context\nlearning_ supported by _connecting and creating actors_\, _double\nembedding_ (of actors in interventions and interventions in\ncontexts)\, and _structuring_ durable supports. Our research\ncontributes to the grand challenge and institutional translation\nliteratures by demonstrating how deliberately catalyzing a translation\necosystem can sustain an adaptive\, resilient and scalable approach to\naddress complex and evolving grand challenges.\n\nABOUT THE SPEAKER\n\nCHARLENE ZIETSMA is the Max McGraw Professor of Sustainable\nEnterprise at the School for Environment & Sustainability and the Ross\nSchool of Business at the University of Michigan\, the Faculty Director\nof the Erb Institute for Global[Charlene Zietsma] Sustainable\nEnterprise\, and co-Director of the Institute for Advanced Construction\nFutures at the University of Michigan. She has held distinguished and\nvisiting appointments in Spain\, Australia\, the UK\, China and Canada.\nProfessor Zietsma’s research and impact work focuses on individual\,\norganizational and collective efforts to make (and resist)\nlarge-scale institutional change in the context of sustainability and\nsocial justice grand challenges. She has lectured on grand\nchallenges around the world and published extensively in the top\nmanagement journals. She was awarded the Administrative Science\nQuarterly Scholarly Contribution Award for making a significant\nimpact on the field of organization studies. Her work has been\nrecognized for its societal impact by the Financial Times\, the\nGlobal Business School Network and EFMD Global’s Going Beyond\nInitiative\, the Responsible Research in Business & Management\nNetwork\, and the Academy of Management Organizations and the Natural\nEnvironment and Social Issues in Management divisions. Professor\nZietsma has held editorial and guest editorial roles with several\njournals.
