STUDENTS\, THESE SEMINARS CAN COUNT TOWARDS THE SIX MANDATORY\nTELFER RESEARCH SEMINARS SERIES\n[https://telfer.uottawa.ca/en/research/events/] REQUIRED FOR YOUR\nPROGRAM (MGT 6191/ MGT 6991 / MHS 6991) (4 SEMINARS FOR MSC\nPROJECT-BASED STUDENTS).***_\n\nKEVIN KELLOWAY\, PHD\n\nBereavement\, loss and grief are universal human experiences that can\nhave profound implications for individual functioning. \nOrganizations\, however\, are largely unprepared to support employees\nwho are experiencing bereavement.  Drawing on a series of recent\nstudies I [a] show that employee bereavement policies are largely\ninsufficient to meet the needs of the bereaved\, [b] show that employee\nneeds during a time of loss are described through the C.A.R.E.\n(Gilbert et al.\, 2021) model and [c] show that training managers in\nthe C.A.R.E. model results in more supportive responses to\nemployees.  In a second line of research\, I show the need for\norganizations and their leaders to respond appropriately when an\nemployee dies by suicide and show the importance of transformational\nleadership for reducing suicidal ideation among employees.  Taken\ntogether these studies highlight the role of organizational leaders as\ninterpreters and implementers of organizational policies.\n\nABOUT THE SPEAKER\n\nE. KEVIN KELLOWAY\, M.Sc.\, MFA\, PhD is a University Research Professor\nand Professor of Psychology and Management at Saint Mary’s\nUniversity.  A prolific researcher he served the maximum of 14 years\nas a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair. He[Kevin Kelloway] is a Fellow of\nthe American Psychological Association\, the Association for\nPsychological Science\, the Canadian Psychological Association\, the\nInternational Association for Applied Psychology\, and the Society for\nIndustrial-Organizational Psychology. He has been recognized for\nDistinguished Contributions to Canadian I/O Psychology (CSIOP)\, as a\nDistinguished Psychologist in Management (SPIM)\, for contributions to\ninternational stress research (ISMA-Federation) and has received\nPresidential Recognition as a Scientist-Practitioner (SIOP).  His\nresearch focuses on occupational health psychology and\, in particular\,\nthe role of leaders in promoting health and safety at work.
