Tell us an interesting fact that we do not know about you Dilraj, Do you have a unique talent or hobby?

I had great interest in music during my early years of adolescence. I liked to listen to a lot of songs and even started to play some instruments while being part of the band ensemble at school. During one of my summer holidays, I installed a sound mixing software on a computer and started re-mixing existing songs. Eventually, I started to make my own beats and sounds which would be remixed with other mainstream songs. The quality of the remixes improved tremendously in a short period of time. I did not have access to Internet back then and computer time mainly consisted of mixing software.

When I returned to school that fall, I showed some of my remixes to my friends and they soon became popular around the school. There were some teachers requesting to hear my music as well. The most fascinating part of this story is that they played my remixes at our prom party which was hosted by the Toronto Raptors’ DJs 4 corners!

Choosing to complete an Executive MBA is a big consideration. After reviewing the various masters’ programs available, why did you choose to enroll in the Telfer Executive MBA Program?

Having an undergraduate degree in business taught me the fundamental skills about business, operations, and management. My program was heavily focused on information technology and consulting.  I therefore consider myself to be a hybrid of great understanding of business and how technology can be leveraged to fulfill those requirements.

I was researching for the best MBA school that was most fitting for me. My criteria was to look to expand my network, get hands on experience with management and consulting and also engage in face-to-face conversations with active practitioners and peers.

The Telfer Executive MBA’s Signature Series of Six Business Consulting Projects was extremely appealing and directly co-related with the type of skills and experience I wanted to gain from a business graduate school. As a result, the Telfer Executive MBA was the most flexible, appropriate and optimized decision for me to pursue my future personal and career aspirations.

What do you admire in a leader or mentor? Do you have someone who you consider a strong leader or mentor within your life?

One of my favourite books is called “The Leader Who Had No Title” By Robin Sharma. This book was recommended to me when I first became involved with management and decision making that would impact individuals in a corporation. Some of the leadership values I have gained from this book include taking ownership, not looking for a reward in return, and how to practice positivity and good work ethic.

The qualities I look for in a leader include someone who can collaborate and motivate individuals to perform at their best in a work environment and to develop optimally with their personal ambitions. These can only be driven through positivity, encouragement, providing opportunities, setting an example by doing work that moves the whole team forward and sharing real experiences whether they are good or bad.

I’ve had the privilege to be mentored by a few individuals who have many years of experience in a similar field and in life. Each one has taught me valuable lessons of life.  Consistent communication with them has helped me to stay focused, motivated, humbled and ambitious to strive for excellence. These will help to achieve the goals that I have set for myself that will help me reach the point of self-actualization and self-fulfillment.
