Julie is there a particular location that you have traveled to which you would highly recommend to others? Is there any particular advice on accommodations, attractions or local cuisine you can suggest?
The coast; whether that be the Canadian, US, Caribbean or anywhere overseas, my favourite spot to be is near the ocean. Although the beaches are nice, the biggest draw for me is the ocean itself. The constant rolling waves and the sound of the water hitting the rocks have an immediate calming effect over me. It is a fabulous reminder that the world does not revolve around us and that life goes on regardless of what obstacles we believe are in our way. Even the footprints we leave while walking on the beach are immediately wiped clear with one passing wave; wouldn't it be great to translate this into our own life and allow the negative to be washed away with one passing wave.
Why did you choose the Telfer Executive MBA?
The experience I have gained throughout my career has been phenomenal. But there is one lesson that my grand-parents & parents have impressed upon me throughout the years; you should look to learn something new every day; “If you are learning you are living”. With that in mind, I allow myself to be curious. I am curious about how things work, why people are the way they are, how to make something better, and maybe the most important is what do I need to do to have a greater impact on the things I am involved in. I am not perfect but I am in constant search of what I can do to be the best “me” I can be. This program offers a unique opportunity to learn not only from the professors but also from my peers. The class is full of diverse skills, cultures, backgrounds; I have no doubt that this alone will open our eyes up to different ways of working and interpreting the world around us. This is what I hope to add to my career tool box.
Julie, What qualities do you admire in a mentor?
Over the years I have developed an amazing support network and within that there are a number of leaders/mentors each in their own discipline. What I admire most of these people is there uncanny way of challenging my status quo without making me feel stagnant and helping me reach new levels. Where I see my potential today is further than I thought it was yesterday thanks in large part to these amazing mentors.
