Matt, thinking back to your adolescence was there a particular job you dreamed of doing when you grew up?
I was interested in many professions as a child but I wasn’t strongly inclined towards any specific one. I think this is in part due to the influence of my parents, who each had interesting and varied careers, including owning several successful businesses. They worked hard, built strong community connections and expected my siblings and I to contribute to the businesses (or at home) when possible. Their example provided me with a core set of values related to work and encouraged me to explore various career options.
What are you looking forward to completing while in the Telfer Executive MBA Program?
I am really looking forward to completing the six business consulting projects. I am excited to collaborate with my team and the clients and understand the challenges posed in each of the projects, work through the consulting process and produce meaningful results. The opportunity to apply the concepts that I will learn in-class towards real-life business situations will make the learning process highly engaging and relevant.
What qualities do you admire in a mentor? Do you have someone you consider a strong mentor in your own life?
Reflecting on the various leaders and mentors I have encountered in my career, what I admire most is the ability to successfully meet organizational goals while also creating a healthy and dynamic working environment. I’ve most enjoyed working for leaders who take a genuine interest in the welfare of their workforce, encourage managers and employees to develop new competencies and maintain open and constructive communication. I believe this approach to leadership, while sometimes difficult to maintain, will ultimately increase the long-term viability of an organization and create a more effective culture within the professional community.
I have been privileged to have had a mentor throughout the last 2 years. This individual has assisted me to understand and assess various challenges and opportunities in my career, consider my professional goals in the broader context of my life goals, and was instrumental in my decision to choose the Telfer Executive MBA Program.
