Mohamed, thinking back to your adolescence was there a particular job you dreamed of doing when you grew up?
I have always loved tinkering with wires. This lead to my nickname growing up of 'Han dassa' which means 'Engineer' in Arabic. I earned this nickname at the age of five when I actually created a closed electrical circuit by myself. By the age of eight I had gained a reputation around the neighborhood for my abilities to 'repair' household electronics such as radios, irons, toasters, etc. I am pretty sure that my parents were actually just secretly buying identical replacement toasters and things to encourage my interest. In any case, that 'tinkering' as a child led me to pursue my PhD. in Electrical Engineering as an adult.
Choosing to complete an Executive MBA is a big consideration. After reviewing the various masters’ programs available, why did you choose to enroll in the Telfer Executive MBA Program?
One of the reasons that I chose the Telfer Executive MBA Program is because of the consulting projects that are embedded throughout the Program. Coming from a technical engineering background, I learn best with the tangible application of the theory. This integrated course content will encourage me to test new leadership styles and occupy different roles within the team environment throughout the program. I am excited to improve my ability to articulate strategic vision in order to overcome business challenges.
Mohamed, is there a particular not-for profit organization or club which you support? What draws you to this cause?
My wife signed me up to volunteer at the Ottawa Mission to serve turkey dinner last Thanksgiving. She said to me 'you need to go out of your comfort zone' and she was right! This was a different experience from my other contributions to volunteer organizations for the needy; this was the front lines and it was emotionally intense. The feeling of selflessly helping somebody and seeing them benefit from it is incomparable. This year my wife and I planning to sign up as volunteers together : )
