Derek, thinking back to your adolescence was there a particular job you dreamed of doing when you grew up?
I always wanted to be a lawyer when I was young. They always drove the best cars on TV and in movies and they seemed to have such charisma at the trials as they tried to sway the jury. By the end of high school I had lost most of my interest in practicing law but I still sometimes wonder what that career path might have held.
There are many compelling reasons to undertake an Executive MBA Program. What is your goal for the Telfer Executive MBA Program?
There are a couple of goals I have in taking the Telfer Executive MBA program. First, I’d like to further my professional network and I’m not sure there is a better way to meet some of the top talent in Ottawa. Then there is the financial side of the program that appeals to me greatly. I am quite strong on the marketing side of business but I’m looking to improve my financial acumen.
What qualities do you admire in a mentor? Do you have someone you consider a strong mentor in your own life?
What I admire most in a leader is their ability to inspire people to do and be more. A great leader can make a team feel invincible and ready to take on anything and win. There a number of people whom I have had the privilege to have worked with in the past that truly inspired me and showed me what it really means to lead.
