Job Title
Director, Faro Mine Remediation Project
Aboriginal Affairs & Northern Development Canada
Lou Spagnuolo

Lou, tell us about an interesting fact we do not know about you. Do you have a unique talent to disclose?

When I was in my teens I was ‘recruited’ into the family business by my Uncle. During those ten years I worked summers and weekends where I learned masonry and concrete skills which I continue to use to this day. I still remember the day when a customer told my Uncle that they preferred my concrete finishing technique to his - what an honour! There is something to be said about the instant gratification you get when building something with your own two hands!

The Telfer Executive MBA Program is full with experience. What are you looking forward to completing while in the Telfer Executive MBA Program?

I am responsible for managing an annual budget of close to $50 million dollars so I am very keen to learn as much as I can about the various accounting and financial management practices used in business. I have always been good with numbers and work very closely with our organizations financial and accounting experts. Completing an MBA will allow me to build a strong foundation to continue effectively manage budgets.

What qualities do you admire in a mentor, Lou? Do you have someone who you consider a strong mentor or leader within your life?

I most admire leaders who fully support their team members, encourage out-of-the box thinking and reward hard work. One of the first managers I had in the public service was a strong leader who would always support ideas that didn’t follow the ‘norm’, never assign blame when something went wrong and always took the time to celebrate the small successes. I continue to be in touch with her and she continues to provide inspiration for my current ambitions.
