Cold Weather Did Not Dampen School Spirit

Written by: Jennifer Hyland, Alumni and Special Projects Manager

Friday, September 12th proved to be a chilly day but that didn’t keep the alumni away from the 20th Annual Telfer School of Management Scholarship Golf Tournament.

While my colleagues and I huddled together at the registration table pointing people in the right direction and trying to stay warm,  242 Telfer alumni, sponsors and friends were geared up to play golf.

Throughout the 18 hole course, several  other golf related activities were set up for those who wanted to challenge themselves, show their competitive spirit or simply give back to the School including a putting contest, hole in one challenges, contests for longest drive, closest to the line and closest to the pin as well as a precision game. It was at the putting contest where I witnessed sheer relentlessness by some of our alumni as they paid over and over to take part in the challenge determined to sink that ball in the hole.

As evening set in, I think everyone, golfers and volunteers alike were happy to escape inside for a hot dinner put on by The Meadows Golf and Country Club. Activities continued throughout the evening with a silent auction, a live auction, raffle draws and of course the coveted golf awards of this year’s tournament. The energy in the room over dinner was incredible; louder and more energetic than in years past I believe.

At dinner, Dean François Julien recognized the 20th Anniversary of this particular golf tournament and named the 2 individuals who founded the event and 2 more who were the founding sponsors of the event. Two of the four individuals mentioned were in attendance at this year’s tournament; 1 of them being our own Executive MBA alumnus, Jim Orban (Class of 1998) who is a founding sponsor of the tournament (when he was with the Ottawa Citizen). Dean Julien engaged the audience to find out how many people had been taking part in the tournament for more than 5 years and roughly 1/3 of the hands in the crowd went up. When he asked who had played in the tournament last year, half the hands went up and when he asked who would be back for the tournament next year, nearly all the hands went up and a great cheer went through the crowd. Whether you’re a seasoned golfer or new to the sport, this tournament proves to be good fun for everyone.

Being part of the Annual Golf Tournament, whether you are a golfer, sponsor or volunteer brings a great sense of School pride. It’s looking around and seeing people dressed in Telfer gear; it’s hearing people chanting “Telfer” as they drive away in their golf carts toward the course; it’s seeing familiar faces of alumni and colleagues engaging in a sociable and fun activity. But mostly, the pride comes from knowing that each of us is there because we believe in supporting a common goal – continuing to grow the Telfer School of Management and its community. All funds raised at this year’s tournament will go toward entrepreneurship programs and scholarships.

Next year’s tournament is already booked at the Meadows Golf and Country Club on Friday, September 18th.
