As part of the 21st International Leadership Association (ILA) Global Conference and Telfer’s 50th Anniversary Celebrations, we are pleased to invite you to a networking reception featuring a distinguished panel of Telfer C-Suite Alumni to discuss.

We live in a volatile, uncertain, complex and challenging time. With economic inequality, financial and political instability, environmental and social crises all on the rise, management education can, and must, play an important role in reshaping and rebalancing the choices made by leaders in business, in our social enterprises and in our public sector institutions.

Join our panel of Alumni from across programs (BCom, MBA, MHA, EMBA), industries (consumer goods, health care, government/technology) and cohorts (1973 to 2018) as we explore the role of management education in preparing courageous leaders of the future. As part of Telfer’s 50th Anniversary celebrations, we’ll not only look back at how management education has helped our panelists make an important difference to communities they serve, but more importantly look forward to explore what can be done to better prepare the next generation of business school graduates to lead courageously in these challenging times. Amongst other topics, we’ll explore:

  • How has the purpose of management education changed in the last 50 years? How might it evolve in the next 50 years?
  • What are the opportunities that management schools should capitalize on to more effectively contribute solutions to the challenges the world is facing?
  • If Telfer were to embody best practices in terms of societal impact in teaching and student activities in the future, what would this look like?

What is the ILA and the ILA Global Conference?  
The mission of the International Leadership Association (ILA) is to advance leadership knowledge and practice for a better world by serving global professionals who practice, study, and teach leadership. With over 2,500 members from 76 countries, the ILA works across sectors, professions, disciplines, cultures, and generations to develop and advance the practices, programs, and theories of leadership for societal advancement.  Over 1,000 ILA members attend the annual global conference every year in October; the conference is held in cities around the world including most recently in West Palm Beach (2018), Brussels (2017), Atlanta (2016), Barcelona (2015), San Diego (2014) and Montreal (2013).  The 2019 ILA Global Conference will be held in Ottawa at the Shaw Centre from October 24-27, 2019.  

What is the 2019 ILA Global Conference All About?
Telfer and the ILA have announced that the theme for the 2019 conference will be: ‘Leadership: Courage Required’.  We know that we live in a time of volatility and uncertainty. The future requires leaders at all levels to act courageously in their lives, communities and organizations. To this end, Telfer and the ILA have attracted an impressive line-up of plenary speakers to share their courage, wisdom and experience including:  The Right Honourable Paul Martin, Senator Murray Sinclair, The Right Honourable Kim Campbell and The Right Honourable David Johnston amongst others.  The program will also feature an impressive list of over 400 workshops, papers, panels and presentations related to courageous leadership and leadership education (for more information, see: https://ilaglobalconference.org/).

What is Telfer’s Role in the Conference?
With our focus on developing business leaders, Telfer is thrilled to be the lead convener and Platinum sponsor of this year’s conference.  Dr. Daina Mazutis (Telfer Associate Professor, Endowed Professor of Ethics, Responsibility and Sustainability), Dr. Ingrid Richter (Executive in Residence at the Telfer Centre for Executive Leadership) and Mr. Glen Orsak (Director, Telfer Centre for Executive Leadership)  are working together as co-chairs of the conference organizing committee. In this role, we have worked with the ILA to design the overall program and event calendar for the conference.  As part of the program for the opening day of the conference, Telfer is hosting the Platinum Sponsor’s reception entitled The Future of Leadership: The Role of Management Education in Preparing Tomorrow’s COURAGEOUS Business Leaders.
