Biography

Recipient of numerous research grants, Professor Lane concentrates his research interests on decision-making processes, simulation modeling and control of dynamic systems, especially in the area of natural resource management and the management of Canada’s coastal zone including fisheries, aquaculture, and oceans policy analysis. He is currently involved in ongoing research on fisheries management strategies, decision making, and strategic planning in Atlantic Canada and internationally.

Dr. Lane is a Professor Emeritus at the Telfer School of Management where he is active in supervising graduate students. He is recipient of numerous research grants including the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) of Canada Individual Operating and Discovery Grants (since 1986), Network Investigator to the National Centre of Excellence on Aquaculture, AquaNet (2004-2005), Principal Investigator and Chair of the Oceans Management Research Network (OMRN, since 2005), a Joint Initiative Program of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). He is currently Co-Director (Canada) of the IDRC-SSHRC International Community-University Research Alliance (ICURA) "C-Change" project (2009-2015) entitled Managing Adaptation to Environmental Change in Coastal Communities: Canada and the Caribbean.

Dr. Lane’s research interests include decision-making processes, simulation modeling and control of dynamic systems, especially in the area of natural resource management and commercial fisheries, oceans management, and aquaculture. He has published peer-reviewed papers in Operations Research, OPTIMUM, the Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, the European Journal of Operational Research, INFOR, and the American Journal of Mathematical and Management Sciences. He has also prepared proceedings for the World Fisheries Congress (Brisbane and Vancouver), major reports for the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) on quota management systems, and for the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Fisheries Committee on the evolution of fisheries management performance and fisheries management and climate change.
