Biography

Allan Riding is Deloitte Professor in the Management of Growth Enterprises (with Professor B. Orser). This professorship was established to develop a better understanding of the business characteristics, strategies and environments that drive enterprise growth. In this context, Dr. Riding’s primary research is the financing of small and medium-sized firms. His work spans bank financing, loan-guarantee programs, angel and venture capital, and initial public offerings. Current research focuses on the structure of the Canadian venture capital sector, preferences for, and access to, financing sources for knowledge-intensive small firms, and financing impediments to international trade.

Publication Record

Among more than 50 articles in peer-reviewed journals, Dr. Riding has published in, among others, Small Business Economics, Management International Review, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, Canadian Journal of Administrative Sciences, Venture Capital, and International Small Business Journal. He also has chapters in refereed books, and more than 60 papers to refereed conference proceedings (of which 10 received awards as Best Papers) He has acted as a consultant to, among others, Industry Canada, the Alberta Ministry of Economic Development, the Ontario Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, the Ontario Ministry of Innovation, the Canadian Bankers Association.

Teaching Areas

At the undergraduate level, Dr. Riding has taught courses in Equity Valuation, Fixed Income Securities, Finance Theory, Investments Analysis, Corporate Finance and Introductory Finance. At the graduate level, recent courses he has taught include Management of Growth Enterprises, Private Equity and Venture Capital and Enterprise Development. He is proud to have received the Carleton University Students’ Association award for excellence in teaching.
