The Telfer School of Management is pleased to invite you for a New Faculty Seminar presented by Assistant Professor Mariam Humayun on Wednesday, November 6, 2019, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.

The business of brand building is not just limited to the organizations that create them. With the rise of social media, gig economy, and ideas such as crowdfunding, consumers have increasingly become major players in the process of brand creation and co-creating brand value.

In this talk, Professor Humayun will be briefly outline her ethnographic and netnographic research into the Bitcoin/Blockchain community since 2014. Based on fieldwork conducted in Toronto, San Francisco, Miami, Berlin, Amsterdam, New York, Prague, Cancun, Cambridge/Boston, and Tokyo, Dr. Humayun will share insights into:

  • how Bitcoin/Blockchain have evolved as decentralized brands over time through various crises and;
  • what socio-cultural and economic forces helped shape them.

The talk may be of interest to cryptocurrency enthusiasts, financial regulators, people interested in the blockchain/fintech industry, and the general public at large.
