The Michel Cloutier Marketing Competition was originally introduced by the late professor and Associate Dean, Michel Cloutier, in 1986. The competition was renamed in his honour in 1991.

The purpose of the Marketing Competition is to bring marketing students closer to the business community by working on a real business case / mandate presented by a sponsoring company.

All fourth year marketing students take this course as part of their marketing major and they relish the opportunity to prove themselves as Telfer’s best marketers!  Three finalists groups present their pitch to a panel of judges after a preliminary round of about twelve to fourteen teams.  Prior to this, teams conduct primary and secondary research to support the analysis and recommendations and their presentation.

A mentoring company’s responsibility includes:

  • Presenting the situation and mandate and responding to students’ questions (usually first week of the course, Telfer School of Management).
  • Provide at least one manager to judge the final presentations.
  • Support the competition with a sponsorship (Students receive part of the funds as prize money)

A mentoring company’s benefits includes:

  • All the presentations of the promotional/strategic plans are available as a resource for decision-‐making regarding the mandate.
  • All market research reports that include data analysis of respondents (e.g., potentially 600) and a copy of the raw data file are provided.
  • Company support is acknowledged in all communication concerning the competition and lives permanently on Telfer’s website
  • Managers receive an opportunity to meet the brightest marketing students in the city for potential employment.
